Good times

Saturday, I traveled 3 hours each way in a snow storm to see my oldest daughter compete with her dance team. They had three different dances. They won 2 and got second on the third. I was real proud of her, as she takes it as seriously as any sport. Gets to school at 5:30am to practice, teaches little girls at the studio after school, and then has her own classes til 8:30pm. So making the trip or not wasnt a tough decision. I did eyeball the new snow the whole way and wonder how easy it would have been to spot coyotes though...

Sunday, The new snow is all gone, but I head out, and find one near the rockpile. I have "John and T" together and they gather it up pretty quick. Im happy with the speed and fight "T" shows for a 9mo pup. I go over to the pivots where "Ty" and I caught one last week, and sure as shit there is another coyote waiting for us. I want to see "John and T" go again, so I drop their side. The coyote doesnt really start to run til its too late and "John" rolls him up. "T" flys in and hits the throat hard. I call it a day, since Capps and Co. are coming tomorrow.

Monday, Capps, Jasso, and the mink man, are on my porch at daybreak. Capps is rarin to go, but I drag my feet until he cant stand it...he is nervous we wont see many as we are expecting a windstorm. I assure him they might not be out in the open, but I know where they live...LOL We load up and head for the running grounds. Capps has Jasso ride with me, I think they were splitting us up, crackers in one truck, beaners in the other... :whistling: We get started and right away Jasso spots one. I send the white boys around to where its headed, and we go around to prevent it from slipping out the back. Capps and the mink man take a long drop and "Speedy, Speedo and Bull" overhaul it right before it makes the back fence. We go check another spot and looks like nobodys home, but just as we are pulling out of the field, Jasso spots one sneaking across the road and into some heavy sage. I head down the road to it, then plow off the road into the sage. We are bouncing pretty good and just as I come over a rise I spot the coyote. It is heading for a barbwire fence, so I decide to drop from there. Well its a damn good thing I do, because as I lock up the truck we fly over a knob and land in a big hole. The dogs "Reba, Cookie, and T" hit the ground ok, and after ducking the fence they move up on the coyote like he is standing still. "Reba" slams into it and the other two move in. We cant figure why he didnt run harder until we get there. Its missing a front leg. Its a big healthy dog coyote. As we go to load the dogs I notice my box door has snapped a weld, and I cant latch the door. We decide to throw 2 of my dogs (John, T) in with Capps and add "Hoss" to my other side. We go try a couple more spots with no luck, then everything changes fast. We hit a huge section of fields. Capps jumps one out of its bed in the sage and has a heck of a race. He loses sight of the dogs but Jasso and I can see most the race. "Hog, Moustache, Blue and John" are working real hard in the tall sage. "Moustache" almost makes the catch but clips some sage and somersaults. "Hog and John" are plowing thru it like rhinos but not able to close. "Blue" trips it and the other three get there. They must be pissed, cause this is a big dog coyote (35lbs+) and they let the air out of him in a hurry. Jasso and I enjoy watching Capps try to wrestle it away from them. We barely get going again and Capps spots another. He drops in the high sage and the dogs split. "Bull, Speedo and T" head to the left, "Speedy" to the right. We cant see the coyote from where we are, but head that way. Capps drops the other side and they go to "Speedy" It looks like she has one, but when the other dogs get to her, they all start to mill around. We are trying to figure out what the heck is going on when Jasso spots one behind us. I head for it hard and at one point a wash shows up pretty suddenly. I notice Jasso trying to hit the brakes from the passenger side... :icon_redface: We make it thru ok so I slide the truck and drop "Reba, Cookie, T and K" Its pretty high cover but the dogs have the wind in their face and get it lined out real quick. "Reba" makes the catch in another wash. All Capps dogs must have heard us leave out, cause as I step out of the truck Jasso says all Capps dogs are coming this way. They join in the fight and there is barely enough room for them all to get a hold... :wallbash: We let them rag it around for a while then start gathering them up. Capps gets there and says "Speedys" coyote got in a hole. That explains why all the rest the dogs were milling at her. Some water and a breather and we move on a few minutes later. Jasso spots one WAY out so I put the hammer down. We get in a good spot and I drop the dogs "Reba, T, Cookie, K". They have gone about 100 yards when the coyote runs past ANOTHER coyote. The other coyote must have been snoozing, but it puts it in high gear right away. The dogs switch to it, and a few hundred yards more "Reba" rolls it. Capps has tried to follow us but we had a pretty good lead. As he pulls up we tell him about the first coyote and he goes to try to get it. It makes the sage, so we go look for more. Capps spots one WAY out and is beelining for it. Im angeling that way and spot a different one. I make a move for it but neither of us gets close enough for the dogs to see. We move on and pretty quick we are another field. We split up and as luck would have it Jasso spots one going away from us. Im in hot pursuit and just as I come over a rise I realize its a big rock wash. Im sure thats where they will find our bodies and the truck, but the good Lord smiles on us and we fly thru the only spot that isnt bowling ball size boulders. We climb up the other side and spot the coyote haulin. I drop "Reba, Cookie, K and T" They are pushing hard, but it looks like the coyote will make the fence. The fence is lined with tumbleweeds. The dogs are running to where the coyote is headed, it almost looks like they dont see it, but you can see them glance at the coyote every few strides. The coyote does not go thru the fence and thats suicide. It runs along side it and the dogs meet it at the end. This is a BIG coyote and he gives the dogs all they want! They get him throated, but I let the air out of him, and I dont hear any of the dogs complaining...LOL Capps shows up and we decide to go try one more field then call it a day. The last field is empty so we head for some grub. Another fine weekend, family, good friends and good times...

Take care.
