bob.243 8,742
Hi, I would like to know your thoughts on the .22 Hornet. Bob. Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
OK I do 90% of my foxing with my trusty cz 527 hornet, its a standard rifle with 8 inch pes moderator fitted, the problem can be the factory ammo most of which is not that good, except hornady vmax35 grain,i load my own 35grn vmax over 12.5 grns of hodgdon h110 rem small rifle primer, giving 3060fps,and sub half inch cloverleaf groups off the bipod at 100yds,it flattens charlie at up to 200yds and i can head shoot bunnies and explode crows at that range, in short the hornet is quiet for a cf with a good mod,its cheap to reload and is not troubled by the wind like a 17hmr for instance, theres a guy on the stalking directory called muir hes in america and he is hornet mad and regularly shoots prarie dogs at 300 yds plus, unless you shoot foxes at extreme range its all the gun you will need, shame its not deer legal these days, a mate of mine shot dozens of roe with one years ago and he reckond it dropped them better than his mates .222 so theres my opinion mate get one you wont be dissapointed,ps hodgdon lil gun is also a superb powder for the hornet, the load i mentioned is a max load if you do decide to reload with h110 do not start your loads any lower than 3%with h110, let me know how you get on mate if you decide to get one CHEERS CHARLIE CALLER. Mr_Logic 5
I will echo Charlie's comments about Hornet. I have one with a cut-down barrel which gives me 3000+ fps with 12.3 gr H110 and a 35gr v-max. Also shoots clover-leaf groups at 100 yards, and is also a CZ527. I would disagree about it being all the rifle you'll need for foxing though. I prefer my .223 for 'general purpose' foxing because it does go that bit further, and uses a heavier bullet so hits much harder when it does arrive. The Hornet is a great rifle still though as I shoot rabbits with it, and also foxes depending on the farm - I do a lot of shooting near horses. Mostly the horses don't care, but the neurotic owners do, and the Hornet is so quiet it makes that easier. I shot a fox about 250, maybe 300 yards from the landowner's house - she never heard the shot and was most surprised when I went up to let her know I'd got one. Success on all levels there! Lewdan 17
Hi, I would like to know your thoughts on the .22 Hornet. Bob. Hi mate , i agree 100% with charlie caller and mr logic. I use a .22K hornet ( Ruger 77 )and load it up with 10.2gns of Vit N110 and a 40gn sierra blitz king head, gives around 2900 fps and is lethal on fox out to 200yds or so. ( take care mine is a K hornet and can be be loaded about 10% more than standard hornet)Any way i think its a great little tool for the job--quieter than other centrefires (when moderated )cheap & easy to reload, accurate, and no recoil to speak of. Some people will say this calibre is more or less obsolete or old hat, DONT believe them still plenty of shooters use them and ammunition is readily available ( reloading )Shot well over 20 fox with mine in about a firteen month period ranges between 50 - 180 yds, Believe me you will not be dissapointed Quote Link to post

Mr_Logic 5
Yep, mine does that too - considering people say that Hornet is "inherently inaccurate", I have to disagree! Mine shot a 4-shot half inch group at 225 yards... Quote Link to post
rory 58
I also own a .22 hornet and was just wondering what mod people would recommend for one? Quote Link to post
Lewdan 17
I also own a .22 hornet and was just wondering what mod people would recommend for one? i have a dragon mod on mine and it does a great job but i suppose any centre fire proofed moderator will do, depends on how much you want to spend PS Good to hear some positive remarks on this calibre which after all has been around longer than most, still does what it says on the tin & has stood the test of time. Mr_Logic 5
Mine ended up with a JetZ CQB which it shares with .223, works very well. Quote Link to post
