im gutted. My bitch has a recurring shoulder injury, happened when she was a pup and never seems to heal. She missed most of last season due a combination of that and ripping her stopper.

A couple of months ago it happened again and i took her to a local greyhound trainer. She has been on lead walks and twice daily linament massage since then and a week ago went back to him to be assessed. He gave me the go ahead and i let her have a weeks free running then took her bushing yesterday.

Shes limping again  . The trainer said if this happens then the next step is ultrasound. i know nothing about it and expect its expensive but im now desperate.

Has anyone had any experience of it, is it good or is there anything else i could or should be doing? :notworthy:

Any advice welcome as im pulling my hair out!!!! its even worse as today i had to staple up the other dog after a run in with a fence so now i've nothing to run and the bloody weather is perfect! :wallbash:

I can't offer much advice about the shoulder injury, sorry. But just to confirm you shouldn't have to worry unduly about the ultrasound. I got my bitch scanned to confirm pregnancy and it was £18.50 or thereabouts at the vets.

Thanks mate. To be honest im not that bothered about the cost, within reason, i just want to get her working. Shes my first lurcher and we've kind of learnt together so im pretty attached to her and the times when she not lame she shows lots of potential. im just worried that she is missing out on alot of experience and even more worried that she wont ever be properly fit.

Any more advice?

hi mate you would be better of buying a porta mag box . ultrasound would not be good enough for that mate with a mag box you put her in when your back after bushing for a short while and it will be beneficial in the long run mate ps i found a good home for the springxjack i showed you i see her most weeks Edited by k94v

Fizz - Cost over a grand at the vet so far, and they suggested i find a trainer as they have more experience with muscle injuries, the guy i use specialises in the recuperation and physio of injured track dogs. Any more useful commments?

k94v - Tell me more? What is it and how does it work? Glad you found somewhere for Lucy, shes a nice little dog :)

No need for sarcasm, you did not mention that you had already been to see a vet.

If you have spent over a grand at the vet and now more with the "greyhound expert", whose advice you followed and it has happened again, do you not think it makes more sense to stop working the dog and just give her a proper 6 months or longer rest and then if it happens again retire her?

I'd be interested to know why you think an ultrasound machine would not be good enough? As you rightly say a Porta Mag box can be usefull for taking the stiffness out of a dog after strenious excersize, but unless Tyla gets the dogs shoulder sorted the dog shouldn't be getting excersized.

Back to the ultrasound machine, first up you have to pinpoint the location of the injury. Then treat the injury for approx 5 minutes twice a day with the ultrasound machine. I assume the greyhound trainer who advised you has an ultrasound machine or knows somebody that has? Failing that they can be bought off ebay at a reasonable price, if the dog suffers from recurring injuries it might be worth having your own ultrasound.

What I would say is if you've not had the dog at a greyhound vet take it to one, there is a big difference between a greyhound trainer and a greyhound vet.

Best of luck.

She is not lame today, maybe she was just stiff an i jumped the gun? Either wat shesback to leadwalksagain til i have a better iea of whats going on.

kiz - apologies for being sarky, i wasnt in the best frame of mind last night. Having to retire her is exactly what im afraid of, seems a real shame as shes not even 3 yet. Thats why i want to explore all available avenues first. She has had long rest periods before but maybe not long enough. im not expert and have been going on what the vets said up to now and nowe trying the trainer as the vets are stuck. Luckily shes insured so the cost is less painful and the trainer has not asked for any payment even though i've offered.

tote - i know the location of the injury, there are two muscles affected but i dont know their names. The recurring one is at the front of her shoulder almost on her chest and the other one, that happened much more recently, is the small round one at the back of her shoulder where it joins the ribs. When they were originally injured both muscles felt flat and stringy, apparently torn muscles fibres? They have since, i thought, healed and now feel the same as her good side. i believe the trainer has a machine but if i need to do it daily then i will buy one as hes not local. i will also find a greyhound vet and, assuming im not jumping the gun, take her to him.

Once i've had a cup of tea i will walk her out again and have a good feel round the affected area and see if i can find anything.

Thanks for your replies

Thermal imaging machine -- George Drake, Eye, Nr Peterborough [pm' ed phone no]

Brilliant on muscle and tendon injuries and also trapped nerves. If you go there, once his assistant has taken the thermal images of your dog, make sure you listen to what George says whilst he's manipulating or massaging your dog because he will probably explain the problem and give you some idea of what to do if/ when it happens again. £20 for a consultation, I think.

It costs £12 for your first visit for ultra sound , then £8 after that takes about 4 treatments , its much more intence treatment than a mag box , if its an old injury i would say its a bone man you need first make sure every thing is were its meant to be ........ I use all 3 bone man , ultra sound , and mag box , in that order ..get the dog checked out in that order and it should be fixed in no time ..........were are u based ????
