merle24 61
This is not a topic to create a argument or breed wars, just to get peoples oppinions on the above crosses when being used for allround dogs, big(pre ban) and small fur. I have noticed that the bull x has become a very popular cross in the past few years in particular, and the deerhound greyhound has become less and less popular or common. Is this due to the fact that the bullx is a better breed at the job or easier to enter to quarry or just because the decent deerhound blood is becoming very rare and harder to get hold of. The deerhound greyhounds used to be very common and highly rated or even the smaller 3/4 greys, as great allrounders, takeing rabbit, fox, hare(daytime too) and deer, got some brain too not just smashing in machines. please no bitching just constructive comments or past present lines would be helpfull. Happy hunting. Edited November 15, 2009 by merle24 Quote Link to post

lancer 13
well its just a guess but i reckon a deerhound greyhound would sicken itself on foxs before a bull greyhound would, theres a big diferance between catching an odd fox than catching a lot regular. Quote Link to post

Take the saluki cousing lines for instance, when the saluki blood came to uk and crossed with the greyhound it was a pure case of hybrid vigour, these animals were so far apart and gelled together to make a hare killing machine with great stamina and speed, but once these crosses are bred to each with a few different but close lines the vigour is said to be lost as the dogs are no longer hybrids as they have bred a type, as you will know there is not much between the saluki greyhound stuff in the uk, and there is fair wastage, as alot are close bred and it is more the man behind the dog, but if fresh saluki blood was introduce to pure greyhound this might create fresh hybrid vigour and purke up the coursing blood in the uk. Interesting, i know that bull breeds have a high pain tolerance, but they need is because of the way they go about the job, deerhoundgreyhound maywell go about the job in a way that minimises damage to themselves. merle24 61
the problems not with the breeds being used in either cross but with the individual sire/damn. good deerhouns across good grey hounds will give you good allrounders just like good bull across good greys will you give good x's too. problem is nowadays we have untried bull bieing put across failed track dogs etc.. and being called bull x's.... just like we have show deerhounds being used on greyhounds when neither has seen any real work.......recipie for disaster. Yes i agree with you there mate a good base is a must, and like you say alot stuff is bred from failed track grehounds as they are easily to get hold of, the coursing the greyhound would be a far better option imo to cover, but they are few and far between especially with the courseing ban. But is the grey just there for the speed, and would even a below average track grey chuck us plenty enough speed for what we want ? Edited November 16, 2009 by merle24 Quote Link to post
merle24 61
imo theres more to either parent then just speed or gameness. both should be sound with stock, confident, have a good level of intelligence, obidient, not nervey good traits like that....all too often things like this are ignored for say speed or agression, thats when currs arrive.
