Mr_Logic 5
I have a Ruger M77 VT in .308, which I have used for target bashing for about a year and really don't like. However, the other half does like it, so I will set it up for her. Which means I need a rifle for shooting targets up to and including 1000 yards. I know I should buy a Savage F/TR or proper target rifle. But I don't have the money, not by a long shot, and not all my target work is that far out (most isn't) Given that other half will want to be on an almost level footing (she's not having the Nightforce, full stop!) I need to get my mitts on a heavy barrel varmint rifle. I can get about £500 for my Winchester SX3, and I want to spend as little as is humanly possible after that. Thus far looking at heavy barrel Howa (standard 1500 Varmint with Hogue stock), Remington (SPS-V, PSS would be better but budget ) or Savage (10FP). Thoughts? Cheers muchly! Quote Link to post

May be a silly question, but what calibre are you looking to? Are you committed to .308? By far the most accurate calibre for 1000yd shooting as of now is the Norma 6mmBR. 25 rounds in a 3" group at 1000yds. The Norma is NOT the same as the Remi 6mmBR; longer bullet, higher BC. If you are serious about 1000yd shooting you're gonna need at least a 28" heavy barrel and a fast twist and a high muzzle velocity to ensure that the bullet stays supersonic up to the target range. When a bullet drops from just supersonic to below sonic speed the ballistics go to hell in a handbasket. That's why supersonic .22lr are so inaccurate. Mind, this may just be Mr Armchair again . . . SNAP SHOT 194
.308, factory rifle only one answer really, TRG22 really really accurate, and excellent barrel life in .308... look for second hand in the recession, and plop your N/F scope on it, maybe a little above your budget, but an excellent gun for long range.... take a look for a deal. i've seen a few at really good money, i'll keep my eye open for one .... Snap. Quote Link to post
Mr_Logic 5
Thanks Snap - if you see something... I am committed to .308, got everything I need for it, like F/TR as a discipline, and I like the .308's barrel life! Is it the best long range rifle calibre? Nope, but it's a level playing field.
