As long as they are 21 or over uk resident and have known you 2 year or more anyone can sign it does not matter about there social standing.

Now i didnt know that bit about them being anyone over 21 , i always thought they had to be some sort of proffesional

Does this apply to fac too

If she meets the background criteria she can sign both!

andycanman I think you may have got it wrong.

For a FAC application you must have 2 referees who can be "anybody" as long as they are not relatives or Police and over 21 and have known you for 6 months to a number of years, they both have to fill in a full reference sheet and send it in separately with out you seeing it.Each one can referee for the whole family as long as the fit the requirements.

On a Shotgun application you have 1 counter signature, who MUST be a professional, accountable person of standing ??? ie MP, Dentist, solicitor, Doctor, Nurse, somebody with qualification letters after their name who you have known personally for at least 2 years, and they can also sign for the whole family if you want and they the fit the requirements.

This can be quite hard for most people, and they have to be happy to sign, (when i 1st applied for mine back in the early 70's my Dr was an anti and she refused to sign it, nothing i could do about it) most Doctors will sign today no problem, but they will charge for it.

" WARNING"**** YOU MUST PUT ANY NICK NICKS, CAUTIONS, SPEEDING TICKETS ETC DOWN ON THE APPLICATION, THEY WILL CHECK, AND IF YOU HAVEN'T PUT IT DOWN THEY CAN REFUSE YOU.

IF YOU PUT IT DOWN, AND THEY REFUSE, YOU CAN APPEAL. I KNOW SOMEBODY ON THEIR FAC APPLICATION WHO WAS PICKED UP ON A MINOR OFFENCE THAT HAPPENED, 35 YEARS AGO!!! WHICH THEY HADN'T PUT DOWN.

BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY, BE HONEST, THAT'S WHAT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR, A LAW ABIDING, SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE, DESCENT CITIZEN.

Hope this helps

I just got a mate to sign mine, he already holds SGC & FAC, but no letters after his name, but if you think about it, they cant knock you back, as otherwise they are saying, this person who holds both certs is not an accountable person of standing

Now... thats what i always thought, and in the past ive had the local doctor, directors of companies etc... sign mine. BUT... last time my SGC came for renewal, i couldnt think of anyone who met that criteria, so I just got my girlfriend, whose a salesperson to sign it. It went through no problems what so ever. So, it may just be that a salesperson (or anyone who works in an office) is classed as a "professional"?

  • 2 weeks later...

I got my SGC 5 years ago, i firstly got a neighbour who was a train driver, i read the signatory part saying it had to be a professional but not a relative or a serving copper, it listed jobs the signatory could do, then eneded with person of similar standing.....so i presumed that a tube driver would be OK, as being an upstanding member of the public with no criminal record etc.....

They bounced my application purely because because he wasn't employed in one of the listed occupations, JP,GP,Army officer etc........anyway when i rang the lady in teh firearms unit had a definitive and fuller list of occupations that were acceptable............towards the end it had firefighter (also a retired copper can sign but not a serving one!) anyway the wifes mates brother was a firefighter so he signed for me.............

Just waiting for my first renewal, since i got my SGC i now know a teacher who i sometimes go ferreting with......he signed this time

Been told by my FEO that it has to be someone on a public list of qualifications, like a solicitor, teacher, doctor etc....(i think so they can look them up!)

edited to add they also said company directors and employers can sign if its a company of some standing and you work for them....so your manager etc...might be ok
