Gun wise there are very few bad brands, just a few bad guns that crop up from time to time. It tends to get personal! ATB!! Quote Link to post

Grousekeeper84 2
Why does everyone insist on using .308 for deer in most situations its totally overkill, a horible calibre to shoot and drops like a stone! If u really want to throw a heavy bullet around why not go for something like a 25-06. Roe deer and munjac etc certainly dont need a .308 for a clean kill people shouldnt compensate for their bad shooting by using a massive round that they only have to put in the middle of the big brown bit and pull the trigger. There fore hindering the people that aren't good shots! secondly i also travel to south afroca and .308 is is the caliber of choise for a lot of PH's. so thanks, but no thanks for what shoddy advice you offer. Paul.L 0
Grousekeeper84, imo you have just given me an insight to your inexperience spouting such drivel.I suggest you research the calibre .308 win properly .Why is it a horrible calibre to shoot, not as flat as some ,so get to know your ballistics ,to much recoil then you need to man up a bit . Deker 3,478
This .243/.308/whatever debate has been raging for years and it will never be resolved! Simple fact is there is NOTHING in this country you cannot stop with a .243! If you want/prefer/require/need .308 then fine. I have the choice of what to take out of the cabinet and rarely in the field do I find the need for the .308 over the .243! Yes, I take care where I put the shot, and I'm careful with ammo choice! Seems there are strong views from all camps on calibre, I see the answer as simple, if it works for you then use it, but no need for anyone to tell the rest of the world their choice is wrong! HUnter_zero 58
Why does everyone insist on using .308 for deer / a horible calibre to shoot / drops like a stone! If u really want to throw a heavy bullet around why not go for a 25-06 / Roe deer and munjac etc certainly dont need a .308 for a clean kill. First, WELL DONE TO THE OP FOR PASSING THE DSC1!!! sincerely, congratulations! Grousekeeper : Not everyone insists on using a .308 for deer, there are many suitable calibres out there that can be used on a all UK deer species. The problem is that not all calibres are universally suited to all species. The .243" is not suitable for big Exmoor reds but great for roe. The .308 is a superb calibre to shoot as many Bench-rest shooters will testify, it always amazes me the people to claim to shoot the BIG .308 and how they go in to graphic detail about the serious recoil and shoulder injuries they sustained whilst shooting the .308. Well the truth is that the .308 recoils less than a 12 bore, it is very accurate and it is a universal deer calibre for the UK, giving the option to take all deer in a variety of situations. I was amused at the drops like a stone & really want to throw a heavy bullet around why not go for a 25-06 comments. There are very few rounds that don't have problems with trajectory as all bullets will fall back to earth, the issues isn't the calibre! As for the .25-06 and heavy bullets, it is a great deer stalking round IMHO but it's not for heavy bullets. If you want to use heavy bullets then none of the above is suitable John Quote Link to post
