HarryL 0
Hi Guys Just wondering if anyone of you have had experience or seen a stainless steel barrel and action start to go rusty ? I took delivery of a new rifle in SS 3 weeks and its only been out the cabinet once and to my amazement today I noticed that its started to go rusty in a few places. When the rifle was last out it had been cleaned / wiped down etc and the cabinet has got 4 descicant bags in so I cant see that attracting moisture. I work offshore and for years now we have being seen a vast difference in the quality of marine grade stainless(316), when we have approached manufacturers about this they say its because the quality of raw materials they are being supplied are inferior due to the high demand.... Is just a suprise to spend all that money and the bloody thing going rusty. Cheers Quote Link to post

Cheers One of the advantages of stainless is its durability in the damp etc, something doesn't seem right, I have 2 stainless and no "rust" issues at all. Quote Link to post

jamie g 17
most of the problem is whe the temp go's up and down ie'' if its cold and damp in morning then evening your heating is on thts when the dam really sets in. just leave the room window open alittle. and keep the bags in there to take the water away. heating down low Quote Link to post

All stainless steel rifles are prone to RUST !!! The 'normal' ie. non rusting stainless steel is NOT used in rifles ! Although branded as all weather rifles they still need care and attention . Clean hands / light oil when put away and stored where there is little heat fluctuation . Tikka's can rust in hours if the barrel is touched by sweaty hands. Mr_Logic 5
This is true. Remington like to push their TriNyte coating, there was a picture on their website of 'stainless' barrels left in saltwater for a test - of course only theirs was pretty much rust-free, but it did make a point. Chap..Chill out, I made a brief response which was to the point and accurate. Stainless barrels are less prone to surface oxidation than most other metals used for barrels/actions. They handle temperature and general climatic changes better, but of course they need cleaning and looking after! I have to suggest a new Sako Rusting in 3 weeks has a problem! My Tikka has taken all sorts of s**t over more than 2 years and is as good (probably better) than new!! Quote Link to post
Hunting-top-shots 2
Stainless steel will rust if it comes into contact with Salt or Chlor salts, there is one type of SS that is used in Swiming pools that will not rust but appart from that one all of the others will rust. another thing that can make Stainless rust is contact to normal steel if the normal steel scratches the surface of the Stainless the normal steel molecules will attach them selfs to the stainless and then the rust will start at the scratch point and then travel. I have 2 Stainless rifles that I keep in a seperate safe and just a touch of oil from an old rag is use to clean them when I put them back. HTS Quote Link to post

It was misleading and not helpful to someones request for help. A NEW sako/tikka barrel off the shelf WILL RUST IN HOURS if handles with sweaty hands ! Do's your tikka take all the S**T with all the last 2 years Red Stag shooting ? Quote Link to post
