shamus 36
Made up a smoker yesterday by welding a threaded nipple to my chainsaw exhaust that i then could screw a threaded pipe, about two feet long,to.Seemed to work fine but most of the rats i bolted were half grown, very few adults. The holes were all along a hedgerow, the rats have recently moved there to feed on a strip of bird feed. What i want to know is how long should they take to bolt,as they all bolted practically straight away, should i have kept smoking for longer? Do the adults take longer to bolt? Quote Link to post
JDFrain 1
hi mate, I have found variations in how long it takes rats to bolt, i would presume this is how big the chambers are etc below ground, also i suppose how long the rats can tolerate the fumes before they leg it.....( you should here them start to cough hahaha) I tend to keep the smoker going for a good while until the dogs start to loose intrest in the area, then move on also i move from hole to hole just to make sure that its getting filled with smoke. willum 89
i use an old 2 stroke strimmer aqnd find that i have not had very good results with smoking rats out and i know they are there because its on a bank againts a sugar beet pad and sugar beet feild the holes are run clean see loads at night go there next day fill them full of smoke dogs marking holes waite ages and nothing appearsfind that if you have a water bowser to hand works much better flood them out. william slater mcgregor 2
you shouldnt have to put extra oil in the fuel, the fumes from a brand new engine will kill you ,whether its a 4stroke or 2stroke engine it dont matter, carbon monoxide comes from burning petrol not oil,i found the rats that dont bolt are usally killed by the fumes in the holes atb Quote Link to post
timmy k 590
gotta agree there the ones that dont bolt sharpish die down the hole, used to have a lurcher that id go smokin with and once the rats stopped bolting hed dig out the dead ones, dont know how he found them the smell of fumes must of been overpowering. but thats probaly why your only seeing younger ones, the older once are probaly more wary of bolting prefering to chance it below than surface with all the noise above ground Quote Link to post
