i agree with stabs on that.

i also think that far too many people call their terriers allrounders just because they do a bit bushing, ratting and once bolted a fox or something.

i have a black dog here that bushes and rats as good as most and catches the odd pheasant.at feather hes better than anything ive owned in the past.in my opinion hes a good sporting terrier but isnt yet an allrounder, to me an allrounder has to be good to ground.

for example any terrier that dosent stay can never be called an allrounder imo.

I was brought up with terriers that work underground and thats what i'll continue to do. My terriers only see rats when they're at a young age, rabbits are a big no no in my opinion but eveyone to their own. I have yet to see a good "all rounder dog" round my way as the ones that are used for bushing etc just lack the courage, knowledge, etc for underground work

I want my terrier to do his underground work,I dont need an allrounder.most of my hunting is to wild boars and I've good hounds for this .I've tried to work my terrier with them but it didnt work,he was allways going to ground on his own So i've decided to work him only to ground.

To me a working terrier is a dog thats primary job is to got to ground and stay until dug out :guitar: My old bitch has only been to ground a small number of times but does a fair bit of ratting and rabbiting so I would class her as more of a sporting terrier :D As has been said my terrier works cover but this can be scary unless you know your ground very well, numerous times my dog has entered cover and not returned for several hours which can be unsettling to say the least

me myself i got my terrier mainly for rats and rabbits she marks them both very well but obviously doesnt catch many bunnies i also have her off the lead permanently when i am out on the land i have permission on she also works all cover and bushes very well doesnt mind being in the water if theres something to catch also the stock she comes from are very good on fox so may consider her this season as she is two but i will have to introduce her to these as she hasnt seen one before.

I agree with both sides there is good and bad in both there is many times when i have took my terriers out working and they have dropped on a fox to ground without there locator on, i ive had to use my old lurcher to mark where the terrier is, but a good thing is they work in cover, they sing different on different things so i know what to expect what will come out of cover for my lurcher to slip on, both of my terriers are 100% ground and 100% above but the youngest one the bitch out of the two terriers what i have kept back she has only been used on rabbit and rat so far, but i have noticed that the last few months she has started to take interest in fox, she has started marking fox runs through bushes, and getting keen.

And yes it does get scary when your dog is to ground without there locator on but you have to have some comment sense and use the other dog what you have at the side of you but mainly if you know the land like the back of your hand you know where to put them on lead and not to. :):)

To me the best terrier is one that works its heart out under ground. You imagine going in the spots that we ask of our terriers to go in every weekend through the winter and I think we'd nearly all agree thats proppa work for sure. Yes it takes an alert switched on dog to out do a rat on top but they have to be good in all ways when down under thinking for themselves while we wait on top for that mark !!

Good post this, makes you realise just how much we ask of our dogs somedays. You've gotta trust em 100% at the end of the day !!

I work mine on rat , flushing rabbits, ferreting, I just love to watch them work in the open, they have never been entered, don.t need them on lead,s they come back straight away on the recall, I just have a graet time with them, every day.

you can't be sure to know all the earths in an area expecially here with the mediterranean woods we have.

last year my dog went to ground not too far from my house in a small one holer hidden inside a big blackberry bush. I and members of my family and friends hunted there for all our life but no one has known of this set.

i agree these so called terrier men, put there dogs on a lead and walk them from hole to hole, dont let them hunt up or anything,is that terrier work ,lets here your opinions

Err..........the clue is in the name.....TERRA! :icon_eek: ..........

Surley if you just wanted a flushing dog you would get a beagle or something.......

Not having a go mate but some of these guys spend a lot of time and effort entering these dogs and dont want to feck it up..........

As I think someone allready said, if a dogs inclined to fly to ground, you dont want it running hear, there and everywhere.........no option but to be a bit sensable these days.

my 2 stayed coupled all the time .if not they are gone to ground.they only work where i want them too.its the best thing in the world when you break through and the terrier has got something pushed up tight.

A mental note has been made of who I would and would not spend a day with . :11: I agree with those who want a terrier for earth work only.Coupled til the time is deemed right by myself and not a free ranging terrier .Ratting necetates terriers off the lead but can still end in dogs getting to ground in places freshly dug out .IMO a terrier wanted for bushing only should be discouraged from going to ground .Ive seen terriers in the beating line that I have dug to and Ive cringed as we aproach a known place ,woundering if the dog will obey its master or not .Terriers on couples are not just there to lengthen the owners arm. :)
