Guest baco
i like my terriers to be (allrounders) if there is such a thing.she will kill rats in chicken sheds, bush and mark out rabbits, good with ferrets and got a good nose for charlie.ive been out with lads who have cracking fox dogs but wont let them off the lead.to me a terrier is bred to hunt and work, not be kept on a lead. Guest rattingaddict
walking from earth to earth entering your terrier is still Working your terrier mine run off the lead But NOT if im looking for a fox. I enjoy hunting, rats, stoats , mink etc with my small pack I also love finding a fox and entering my dog to it, this can not be done mob handed with all dogs running free. Quote Link to post

Guest mucker
i agree these so called terrier men, put there dogs on a lead and walk them from hole to hole, dont let them hunt up or anything,is that terrier work ,lets here your opinions whats "these so called terrier men" mean you make it sound cruel. i do it because i want to dictate where they enter, good digging dogs are hard to come by. bushing and ratting dogs are 2 a penny and not everyones into bushing, ratting and shooting to need that kind of dog. for ever reading lads lost terriers because they were off the lead then dropped in a place thats undiggable or they didnt have a collar on no digging gear with them etc etc. i cant afford it. 3 of my terriers have never seen a rabbit and they never will its not cruel they wasnt bred for rabbits and bushing anyway. and people shouldnt assume that dogs used in this way are sat in there run till a dig. theres lots of lads on here alone that dont bush etc and are fanatical about there dogs fitness, miles of road work etc. what dogs you do you have nelly do you use them for earth work? Kane 2
I would of had plenty of blank days if it wasnt for the terriers bushing out a fox for the lurcher. There are a few dodgy spots about and around these the terriers are on the leads.I cant afford a pack of hounds so some days the terriers have to do that job.Finding a fox to ground can some times seem impossable a bushing terrir and lurcher team ups the ods of pushing a fox to ground. If a dog wont work well to ground it doesnt earn its keep no matter how good a busher if it wont enter its good bye. Each to their own. Quote Link to post

diggory 130
personally its a terriers ability to find and stay underground thats first and foremost to me.rabbits are a big no no for my terriers, rats are ok for young uns.theres nowt like hearing a young terrier on his/her first dig but hey each to there own. good hunting. Guest JOEB
Good thread.............. If you are into your earthwork, then IMHO I would use a dog for nothing else. I have never been on a dig, but from what I can see of it, it takes so much time and care to enter a dog correctly and keep it working that I would not risk that time and effort going to waste. If you do not do earthwork, then a terrier and lurcher team can work very well. The right tools for the right job and yes....if it dont do the job, it has to go. Costs as much to feed a good un as a bad un. JMHO JOEB Quote Link to post
TimJ 0
"Working terrier" should have the same meaning as "earthdog". That is where they should earn their keep. As far as an allarounder, I agree. I want my terriers to work anything below the ground. Quote Link to post
Stabs 3
I agree Tim. Without sounding too pedantic, a working terrier to me is a digging dog. Anything else I would class as a sporting or hunting terrier. Quote Link to post
Bantam cock 1
Unless you know your permission like the back of your hand and can state there is nowhere that the dogs can go to ground without your say so then they stay on the lead. It's ok letting them off one at a time properly collered up etc if there are a few holes in some gorse or similar, the dogs know better than me. also I let the dog choose where he/she is going to enter. Letting two or more terriers that work to ground off the couple in an unknown area is asking for trouble IMHO Edited September 7, 2006 by Bantam cock Quote Link to post
Guest the poacher
i like my terriers for ground work like them to go in stick to quarry till dug to Quote Link to post
