Myself and my Dad have kept Wirehairs for many years now. Once you have them working they are unbeatable (especially for rough shooting) but dogs especially are hard work and very trying (dominance wise) a bitch may be better for a novice. They are good in water, have a great coat and are not scared of cover. A good general purpose dog. A springer or lab may be better but shooting over a pointer takes some beating.

Like all HPR's they are slow to mature but hunting instinct is second to none due to the dutch and german lines they do not keep or breed from rubbish mate.

Hi Dunc, I have a 2 year old GWP Dog (my first GWP after a couple of Springers)and I can confirm that they mature quite late, are a real challenge for a novice trainer but are well worth the effort. Smart, fearless (can be a problem)and has endless energy. I have had a couple of injuries because he doesnt know when to stop when the cover is just too thick, sharp.

At home he is great with the family and loves to be one of the pack but he also needs a firm hand otherwise he takes advantage. Doesn't listen to the wife or kids unless he wants to (bit like me).

I wouldnt go back to springers even if the GWP is harder to train the end result is just so much better.

great all round dogs(blood trailing)with a good quick mind(problem solving).can be very hard dogs( quarry wise)and very loyal( causing some of the problems above).as with any dogs they must be trained with consequence, they are bred to hunt and not get bored.

if you get a dog/bitch from good working stock and train it well you will have a top class gundog/rough dog

i have not owned one myself but have helped train 3( and 3 shorthaired).very keen to learn and hard working. having shot over many of these i can say they were sociable and great retrievers. the standard seems to getting very big( part of the trials in germany is to retrieve a fox over a ditch, the dogs are being bred bigger framed).i prefer the older lines which tend to be smaller framed.

a dog definately worth the effort.

the long haired pointers( kleine muensterlaender/grosse muensterlaender/deutsch langhaar) are also very good dogs i don't seem to hear anything about over here, are they little known or less used???

Its your decision dunc but if you like a dog "that goes in hard" you will not find better than the GWP.

I had one from Dutch lines who was as hard as nails, very biddable to me and at the age of 2 was an excellent all round hunting dog, they are an excellent versatile breed and you will never be bored while working them.

I cant wait to get another one.

Hi,

We currently own a GWP and it is her first season this year. When we currently take her beating she shows a lot of enthusiasm but doesnt seem to be 'on the dot' like other dogs. Reason being as my dad keeps reminding me, the other dogs are mainly spaniels, and a lot more mature. Like anything else it takes time, she is still young. Although she is beginning to retrieve game now she still needs one last push to get her tracking, scenting and flushing etc. As long as she is working come this time next year, that will do us, i know its annoying, but patience is the key.

mate, they are the opposite of each other, gwp's are not and should not be hairy gsp's.

do some research on the breeds is my advise.

dunc, Kiwi is right they are totally different breeds in confirmation and genetic make up, its only there names that are similar.

Dont get me wrong the GSP is also a good versatile hunter in its own right and a very handsome dog, but in my opinion they do not hit cover as hard as a GWP (but i am sure someone will put me right)

The GWP that i lost a few years ago, although 27" at the shoulder, used to fly through bramble bushes like some kind of over grown terrier and Gorse never bothered him at all, the thicker the better.

Like Kiwi said, gather your facts mate before making a decision.

thanks Dave i have already made contact about a G/S/P, been in the dog game for a good 35 year i believe 80% of the dog is in the trainer, the pointer thing never interested me till every thing started to get band ie hare coursing fox hunting ect, so swung more to the shooting side now so was just looking for general info cheers.
