Macsen 4
I have a 1995 mitsubishi rvr 4x4 with an auto box and a 2L petrol engine. Drove the car yesterday morning and all was fine, went to drive it last night and the problem reared its ugly head. When I selected 'drive' and tried to pull off, the car wouldnt move, gave it a few more revs, then it started to move slowly(but only at high revs). The only way I can describe whats going on is, it feels like a slipping clutch on a manual car. Anyone with any constructive advice on what the problem may be? cheers
bert69 5
Check the gearbox oil level mate, also when was the gearbox oil and filter last changed?
Macsen 4
cheers mate, will check the oil level sometime this week. filter and oil were changed about 10,000 miles ago I think. Worst case scenario is a new (secondhand) box which are around 200 quid. Any idea how much work is involved in replacing one, I know my way around a set of spanners, just never done an auto box before.

Never done an auto mate, but it can't be rocket science, you will definately need a hydraulic axle lift or pit and a long stroke jack for getting the box in and out. hily 380
if slipping in all gears then as already adviced oil level check if only in drive then brake band or shuttle valve inbox plus if no or little drive in all gears could be torque converter so another box won't cure problem. One sign of torque problem is that the box oil gets very hot as stater or roter is siezed . Macsen 4
It started off slipping only in reverse, but now its all forward gears as well. Will be having a look at the oil level on friday if this fecking rain stops...oh the joys of not having a garage!
Macsen 4
Oil level checked, not much difference in level when hot or cold. When the engine is up to temperature the gearbox oil shows well over the maximum 'hot' mark. I did notice however that when the car has just been started (the engine temp cold) I am able to drive the car backwards and forwards, albeit at high revs. As soon as the engine warms up the car will not move (the revs go to the red line and still no movement)...could it possibly be the torque converter? Macsen 4
Thanks for the advice folks, but after having a look at several other bits of this car I have decided not to bother fixing it, it is now up for sale as a spares vehicle. So if any of you know anyone that needs a 1995 mitsubishi rvr sportsgear with 4 wheel drive and a 2 litre petrol engine with a knackered transmission, then pm me. car has 9 months mot left and loads of useable parts including a full stainless exhaust system (including cat) which has only been on the vehicle for 3 months or so. Looking for a cheap small 4x4 for the winter, so if anyone knows of a decent solid vitara or similar in south/west wales area thats for sale, let me know. cheers.
