stamina ,mate . .saluki ,deerhound , they introduce stamina ,not to mention hybrid vigour ,although its true that the lurcherworld does go through phases of fashionable crosses ,time levels things out and you take a look at what does the job. Many people have commented that some of the best deer dogs theyve seen have been unknown bred ,just lurcher to lurcher , worker to worker ,others will swear by their fav crosses. There are a lot of counties, a lot of deermen and dogs over the last 30years and more. .not a lot of tales of pure greyhounds. The track dogs only got stick for 1or2 runs and the coursing dogs , well you wouldnt want to go out on the plains singlehanded with the 5out of 5 saluki greys. Greyhounds are an essential ingredient of longdogs and lurchers , but for every aspect of lurcherwork theres a cross thats better in my view

The big but was.....if someone brought a greyhound on in the same way that they would a lurcher would it really be that inferior.

 

I know the ex track dogs get a bad press but if a pup was socialised and given the right kind of stamina buiding exercise would it be any worse than any other lurcher.

 

I was meaning specifically for the taking of deer, sorry, should have been clearer. Didnt mean for hare coursing as the thread was aimed at deer dogs.

 

I've never owned one but I know a guy who had an ex courser and it was blinding. However, I couldnt work out whether it was unique to this particular bitch or if it was possible to make a reasonable worker from any Greyhound. Interesting that its mentioned working greyhounds being knocked up as this bitch broke a leg whilst hare coursing. would add well over ten years ago.

i was just using the coursing scenario to emphasise my point that pure greyhound not enough stamina ,deerhound and saluki run all day ,that is what they add to the mix , the best dogs for deer need to take out a few in one session. Stamina dogs cross speed dogs ,

Interestingly enough, a bloke I know was out on ground local to me last week with two pure greyhounds and the terrain is very unforgiving. One dog limped home and the other was half carried. Both had two runs (doubled up) with nothing caught. As I said, very hard ground to run on so not ideal for greyhounds. The dogs aren't bad and have caught a few bits and pieces, particularly on the turf farm where we have permission. Get them out onto bad ground and they suffer.

Never had any probs with 3/8 5/8 bullx. Roe and fallow day and night and red at night.

The red stags too powerful to stop in day as they get into top gear too quick but had stag at night.

greyhounds are fine on good land an for an average guy who wants anite once a week its when your out tree times a week or more they suffer thats why we put good saluk or collie blood thru them or terreir blood , i have saw greyhounds and owned them but you had to choose your land and watch them had long distance bitch who was pretty good ,but thta was it , not hare roe hare roe type of dog when it was legal, a good greyhound is agood dog but you need more to make an allround hunting dog

best dogs ive saw on deer pre ban were tor of dartmoor stuff saluks and there offspring , yet to see better for allround stuff, , probaly one of the best saluks for breeing deer dogs in there time some of the dogs were 85 lb with attitude and wind and somewere lighter but theyb took to getting deer no problem ,they didnt need bull collie or whatever in them this is al preban and history

I have never seen a saluki or saluki grey that i would call a good deer dog. I seen a couple i would say are very good on the smaller deer and maybe the small fallow does but im yet to see one that will take mature fallow does bucks or red deer.

well you learn something mate every day , ive not saw many first crosses like them for years but got pics of catches and there spiols they caught roe fallow foxes , and other qaurry and were tough but some were buggers and would take the fite to anything when wound up , the ones my freind bred reached 26 to 29 inches ranging from 6o lb to 85 lb but with wind and speed ,mined died at seven hunting accident but showed alot of people what agig saliuk cross could do with the [bANNED TEXT] breeding , best nite i had with him was three foxes and best time game wise was three roe and 2 hares on difficult running land a real good dog , got some braw pictres of him

the second best dog i have ever seen on fallow stands at 19inches high , and his 2 brothers 20inches high ,it comes down to a nack and willingness in the end ,that is what i found pree ban .

back in the eighties therre were deErhoundy types crossed with colli types had them and they were handy but honestly taking deer with dogs is aVERY OLD TRADITION IN SCOTLAND AND SOME PARTS OF ENGGLAND, BECAUSE IN SOME AREAS THAT WAS ALL THAT WAS EDIBLE FOR A BIG STRONG HAIRY HOUND,NOTHIN NEW ABOUT IT AS THE SCOTTISH DEERHOUND WAS THERE ALONG TIME BEFORE THE EIGHTIES LOL

i asked my dad his opinion on this last night as hes done alot more than me and he said the best deer dog he owned was a lurcher he rescued from the kennels full of mange and underweight so the breeding was unknowen seen old photos and it had a bullx head but was racy and muscular at the same time if you know what i mean, anyway he said it would bring it down and go for the throat

All these dogs were saluki bred and they certainly put a few deer away. All dead and gone now but before we were restricted to just bunnies these were the only dogs i would ever want to own.They all killed their game with very little fuss even the odd rutting fallow buck

But,.. perhaps a wee smidgen of Bull blood included in the mix would possibly enhance such fabulous critters without doing too much harm

But,..I could well be wrong
