New to ferreting

Hi all,

im new to ferrets and ferreting, i was given a ferret many years ago and went ferreting a couple of times but didnt really know what i was doing. I have just got a couple of jills and would like to get back into it. I was wondering if there was anyone in the Medway area who perhaps wouldnt mind me tagging along with them for a few outings to learn more about the process. Also thinking of gettting a hob for the jills so i dont have to pay for injections each year, is this the best way do you think or is it better to get the jills spayed?

Many thanks for reading,

Paul.

The vas hob in my opinion is one of the best methods, the jill jab i think is no good for a long term solution, i know my vet will only jab once then recommend spaying or a vas.

I have had my vas hob for well over 8 years now, he's getting on a bit and needs the rest  he is now going to retire with a huge smile on his gob :D

If you are getting a hob make sure the vet knows that it is a vasectomy that you want for your hob and not castration.

I'm getting my hob done to bring the jills out of season its probably better instead of paying out all the time.

Thats what i was planning, a one off cost too. Plus i guess it could be handy having a larger hob too as my jills are quite small?

hobs are good for pushing a jill off a kill. i only keep jills but my mate has one of this years hobs to bring on. should be out regular in a couple of week. good luck anyway pal, hope all goes well ;)

Thanks for the advice. Why is a vasectomy preferable?

Thanks

a vasectomy means your hobs gets the pipe from his nuts cut to stop the sperm, castration means his balls get chopped off and thrown in the bin :o if he's got no balls he wont have his way with the jill, so she will stay in season.

A vasectomy will still let him perform although he will be a jaffa,(seedless) castration is, nads whipped out and nothing to take the jill out of season mate.

Another thing i forgot to mention is that if you do get him vasectomised don't use him on your jill for about a month after the op,this will just let things settle down.

Oh ok, i hadn't realised a hob would no longer mate after castration. Didn't give it a thought as it doesn't seem to have stopped my dog, but then i guess a dog is not a ferret.

Thanks for the help.

Sorry for the late reply. I do drive yes, although the only vehicle i have that works at the moment is my work land rover which only does about 50 flat out. Where in Essex are you?

Thanks, Paul.

just saw your answer, too late for yesterday, we had a nice day out but only caught 5, ferreted around 7 warrens that the land owner had quoted seeing hundreds come from, don't they always say that,

Im just across the water in grays, about 5 minutes from the bridge, if anything comes up in the next couple of weeks I'll let you know, if you can get here, you can always jump in one of our motors for the full trip

Sounds like a good day to me. That sounds great if you dont mind? Grays isn't too far at all really, bit slow in the landy but more than willing to do it. I look forward to hearing from you. I'll PM you my phone number just incase you want it.

Thanks, Paul.
