if you where to breed a dog to hunt fox as hounds have done but in pairs , would you stay with hounds or a cross , friend of mine has a fell hound cross lab which is pretty good and anther has a GWPx bull/grey think it only 3/8 bull.. catches a lot with this one good nose loves cover and can still run fast enough to put them to ground :D

I like the sound of the second hound type.A dog that puts charlie regularly to ground single handed be worth its weight in gold.I have see a few Bullx that hunt well even through cover, handy if they stay in the vicinity of the earth once it has sunk. Most of the foxes I used to hunt :D were urban foxes and would seek the refuge of an earth a lot more readily IMHO than their countryside relatives.

Know a few chaps who like to run a pack of terriers and lurchers of all types and sizes, they catch a few on top and below. He says he is to old to change now(in not so many words :) )

A lot of the boys i know have lurchers for hunting the mountain. Some have a fair bit of hound in them but they will tell you that they are not the type of dogs you leave out for a quick walk before you go to work, they are gone!. But a friend of mine has a line of lurchers that has bull/bedlington/hound and a fair bit of greyhound in them. He uses them for hunting the mountain, rabbiting and lamping. The dog he has is very usefull at the end of a dig as well.

Have never seen(as far as I know) let alone owned a lurcher with a strong trace of hound in the make up.Sounds like just the type if you have a good deal of rough land to work.Any chance of a pic Sadie.

The dog i am on about is on this web page. www.irishfeildsports.com go on the terrier and lurcher section and you will see a white lurcher with a bloke kneeling down. there is a small dash of hound in it. you would think more by the pic.
