dave1979 77
you could put a floating island on it with some fed on!!!
kbtfowler 2
I agree with wag. For best results feed every day with a little, much better than once a week with a whole bag. Andy

Any chance of raising the water level so that the banks are not so high? Ducks like to feel safe, with a good view of anything approaching. If you try it, make sure you don't loose the shallow areas. Introduce some water snails. We started to get loads of Pochard after we did it. If you have a lot of moorhens eating the corn, leave it late before feeding, so that there is plent left for the duck. Whole maize used to be recommended if there was a moorhen problem, because it's too big for them. Moorhens are a good sign that you do not have a mink problem! The most important management process for a flight pond is to visit it every (mid)morning to drive away the duck that are starting to use it as a roost. They will then bring a few extra mates back each evening. Count them in each evening(after feeding) whilst staying out of sight. Our experience is that once you have 20 coming in, there will be enough come in the next evening for you to shoot 20. If you wait for the big numbers, you might find that they suddenly drop off for no apparent reason and you have to wait for them to build up again. I have heard it said that mallard get fed up when too many teal start coming in because of all the chatter and squabbling. Stop shooting when there are still duck coming in and pick up without disturbing those that do come late. That way you will be able to shoot more frequently. If you don't try to be greedy and leave halfway through the flight, you should be able to shoot the pond weekly. Isn't 20 a week enough? Most people stay shooting until there is nothing coming in and have to wait 2-3 weeks to have another go. I heard of a pond in Somerset where 152 duck were picked up after one flight. I don't know how long they had to wait to shoot it again. If you just want birds for yourself and have a freezer, try going there every evening and shooting the first pair that come in and then go straight home. I've never been in company that wanted to do this, but I reckon it would be the most productive way for a 'pot hunter'. Edited November 8, 2009 by rjimmer
