shepp 2,285
I use 10 oz purse nets, i find i have no problem with tangling but I seem to have too many rabbits escape from the nets before i get to them. Maybe 1 in 5 escape. Do you think I am doing something wrong or maybe spun polly would purse up and hold the rabbits better? Whats your views on nets. Cheers, Andy Quote Link to post
max abell 196
We use only spun poly now but do still own 40ish 10z nylon nets i dont think its what they are made of that makes a difference on catching them its the way they are put down and you do get a lot of purse nets are to small 3 and a half to 4 ft ones we use now but you do still get the odd escapee thats the way ferreting goes and thats why we love it good luck mate Quote Link to post
The one 8,503
Be interested in the replies is 10z to heavy ??? i like a nice spun nylon myself or is it all down to your net setting abilities ? me i reckon its a bit too heavy Quote Link to post
oakey 57
The advantage of a heavy net is if you have small jill ferrets like mine they can go in and out of the nets with out disturbing them to much nothing worce than having to keep setting the nets Quote Link to post
The one 8,503
But the nets no to let your ferret threw its all about balling up the rabbits so does anybody think 10 z is too heavy .I really interest because im looking to buy a pile of spun and i want to be careful what z i buy Quote Link to post
ferretville 69
I use 6z and they work well for me 10z should work aswell but probably more suited to fox just my opinion , cheers FV Quote Link to post

bramble 0
I use 10z, and 12z nets and have no problem with pursing, spun poly is not sold in z sizes just spun poly. steve Quote Link to post
longnetter 32
I make and sell loads of 10z nets cut from sheet netting (3 1/2 foot £1 each) they're very popular because they're cheap, maintenance free and they work as well as almost any other net . The letter z means that you should multiply the first figure by ten to get the breaking strain of the material i.e 4z is 40lb 6z is 60lb and so on. In the case of purse nets providing it's strong enough the breaking strain doesn't matter, it's the thickness of the material that counts and 10z is no thicker that spun poly or even four ply hemp . But it is limp, doesn't move in the wind and doesn't collect so much rubbish as the 4z examples do . I don't think 10z or even 12z is too heavy at all, sounds like your net laying technique is at fault or your nets are too short (I use nothing shorter than 3 1/2 foot) and I certainly wouldn't change my nets in the hope that I'll take every rabbit because it simply doesn't work like that . Hope this helps ATB Quote Link to post
shepp 2,285
Thanks for the input guys, will save me shelling out on new nets. I do like the 10z because they can take some rough handling and lay down well. Quote Link to post
caterpiller 10
Been using 10z Nets for years with BIG Rings on them and they purse faster than a Greyhound out of trap 6 . I have Ferreted with different Lads over the Years who HAVE LEARNT NOTHING i have seen Lads lay Purse Nets that would never hold a Rabbit as long as i have got an Hole in my A*se, Holes not cleaned out of twigs, Nets caught up on roots etc..... the list is endless but my all time favourite is when some Clown stretches the Net the Max, tiny bit of Net at the mouth of the Hole and the rest spread out across the turf thats a lump of soil for f*ck sake, the Rabbit comes from the HOLE! Once my Net is Set across the Mouth of the HOLE, i put the Peg in as far as the draw cord will allow away from the Net which results in the Net Pursing the second the Rabbit hits it. Happy Ferreting Quote Link to post

waidmann 105
i agree with the above post. its all in the setting of the net. i have some 10z nylon although 90% of my bets are spun poly ( 3ft,3.5 ft and four foot) all are 2inch mesh and all purse and hold. busy making 3 foot hemp nets now. imho spun poly is the best stuff to make them from( as far as knotting and handling of the finished net). whatever the net i hope it catches well bud.
