rabitin girl 16
That's a great ending to a horrible start: I'd love to hear more about her: how old was she when you got her? Got any pics of her: I'm a sentimental old fool and love to hear happy ending stories LOL Not sure how old she was , but I would guess about 4 months . these are the only photos i could manage to upload. First one is when she had just grown all her hair back , the other two are more recent notice how wooley she has got LOL Quote Link to post
Paid 935
She is a beaut, well done you for giving her a new and better life. Quote Link to post
Simoman 110
In the past I have been almost obsessive in having dogs that are almost robitically obedient, my old boy is more of a point and fire dog who works well on the lamp, retreives and is a pleasure to work with, the pup I have coming on is a lot more of a free spirit and I'll be interested to see how he progresses as I have done very little but the basics with him after previously being almost OCD in training............... Paid 935
I'm still only on my first lurcher, and he is certainly a heart dog, not too sure if that's my lack of training, or just his nature, prob both. But what evers the cause, I like him how he is. A hunting partner, and not a servant. Quote Link to post
Bosun11 537
It's a heart dog for me Wilf, every time. Though that can come with a price! For me it's about getting the basics right, to get them in the field young, sound entering and then letting good breeding and long legs do the rest! I like a partner, an ally, not a robot. Sometimes you'll curse them but admiration is forever present. That price I mentioned..... well that can be fatal but thats the game i'm afraid....! Oh yer, that Mercedies chapter 'gets' me everytime too! Edited November 2, 2009 by Bosun11 Quote Link to post

Macsen 4
I think I'm with the majority here when I say it's heart for me. I like my dogs to have their own personality and its only fair to the animal that it makes its own mind up sometimes. After all we humans are far from perfect ourselves so what right have we to expect our dogs to behave like machines. Such is the joy, and sometimes frustration of owning a deerhound x, after close on 12 years with these noble dogs I have come to realise that no other cross comes close for me, even if they sometimes are a little stubborn, slow to mature and suffer from selective deafness. What I expect from my dog will differ significantly from others...I'm not after a bionic dog that takes x amount of game on a night, nor does it have to be the fastest or most intelligent on the planet. As long as it listens most of the time, catches enough for our needs and has some degree of decorum, then its good enough for me. Most importantly I like to see my dog be happy in itself whatever its doing, whether thats a 15 mile trudge across moorland and mountain or a stormridden night out on the lamp. I believe a happy dog rewards its owner with loyalty, companionship and respect, the rest then comes easy. So as I have already said, its heart all the way for me. Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
Thanks for that update Rabitin Girl: looks a beautiful animal she does. AS far as my nearly all Saluki goes, I'm just glad I'm more intelligent than him as I can still con him into doing what I want 99% of the time: I've just got to be quick about it and I've learned to read the signs that say "There's not enough happening right now, I'm off to look for my own game" LOL Having said that he never buggers off out ferreting: great attention span and dedication. Macsen 4
Romantic?...nah, just a realist, I dont need to go out and catch several cartloads of game, I'm not a big time hunter or a pest controller, just somebody who likes the dogs for what they are and occasionally to see them at work. The cross that I own may not be everyone's cup of tea, but he ticks the boxes for me. Quote Link to post
