A dog for your head and a dog for your heart

ye youl get the odd god ones pop up i started with derhoundy colli types in the eighties but good ones are few and far between ,

Lets not get too anthropomorfic (spelling) here folks, a dogs got to have manners, its the TRYERS you gotta love, those that give their all,

one, that, when it runs it MEANS it.

Just reading Chalkwarrens excellent book again and the last chapter "Mercedes" allways makes me smile.........for all his knowlege and the man obviously knows exactly what type of dog he needs, he knows what a properly trained dog should do, but for all that you can really feel the warmth come through when he writes of this out and out running dog.......a wild and free partner that seems so far removed from the perfectly trained herding type of dog.

 

I have had dogs trained to a standard and I have also had the wild free thinking type characters, the dogs that are more your partner than your servant, they walk to the beat of there own drum and will allow you to "boss" them if you deserve such a reward and allways give you there all........its the latter that I really warm to.

 

Its heart all the way for me............

 

So the point of my thread is.........what would you prefer and why............

a good example of heart over head is both me and the brother bought a brother and sister collie whippet greyhound they were or first lurchers i was all hyped up on training books i had the dog trained out to the last always controlling the dog out in the field unfortunly in the end the dog didnt make a gooden looking back know it was all my fault all the time the dog was just looken to use his head do his thing and hunt while all the time i was holdng him back no wonder he was frustrated, where as his litter mate got nothing but a name and allowed to grow up learn for herself the differnt sites and smells the brother didnt know what he was doing at the time but he was doing the think right she went with him ferreting from no age just for company know she marks guards the wholes we just sit watching her to see were the ferrets are and where the rabbits are going to bolt her first night out on the lamp she didnt even run the first rabbit she seen now she gives it her all and runs to the last always looking more, never seen a dummy but retrieves them all yes she can be a head wreaker at times some would say stubburn but we know different she knows what she wants and she knows what my brother wants from here and they both use each other to get what the want shes now coming five and shes tought us alot instead of it being the other way about. i'm running her auntie and though i did a little obedience training, when it comes to the hunting end of the bargin she does her thing with a watchful eye from me. for me its about trusting the dog and achieving a healthy balance. so you can see its difently all heart for me. my own belief is its not about learning the dog what to do if the dog has it in it it know what to do it just does'nt know it yet, its all about giving the dog gidence experiences different sites and smell and giving the dog time to work it out for itself learn its own way.

i have never had a dog i could take out without a sliplead , they have all wanted to run every game they ever saw ,even if it was on the horizon ! The way i hunt ,both day and night , i have to be the one who says run it or not . .even if theyre doing back flips to get off the leash ! All i ask training wise , is a half decent recall when they miss . .i shine the light on the ground next to me and expect them to turn around and mope their way back .

i would have to say heart for me all i would ask is for a decent retreive and they come back [bANNED TEXT] told because if u think about it dogs have it in them to hunt so to ruin that by making them look at u every other second in my book is just cruel and ruining the dog, we can all learn from the dogs and the the dogs can learn from us but not how to hunt so wat im saying is heart for me anyday atb cs

right wilfy i will answer your question ..... i prefer heart ..the reason being that i cant train a dog to high standards ..... .....plus i got an excuse for every thing they do wrong ... like all dog men.....

very truen like last fri saw a lamp in feild wisteled up dogs jumped a femce the sprung over it ,back on my own land , nowdays if you want to last you need a bit of both had dogs that you could not switch of great but needed leashed up now a bit diffrent as the laws are in there favour

i havent tried him on anything other then what he was bred for ...he was only two in september .plenty of time ..i got me other dog for lamping and and messing with .......but razor.s not missing much of what hes coursing ....i know its early season....but without sounding big headed hes pretty much smashing everything hes running at the moment.. touch wood ....had a few missies early on ..but last few outings couldnt be happier .....but like i say its early ....time will tell ....he will get his chance on other stuff whin.....
