Out Today

Recommended Posts

Out with a couple of guys, I've not been with before. They had five polies, four jills and one hob. I have two jills; one cinnamon and her mother a very sleek silver. We went to one of their plots, a bit of dissused railway. We set off at 9:30, and the weather was awful, cucking it down and damn windy.

The first set we get to is a small ten/eleven holer, we decide to put one of mine and one of thiers' in, so my more experienced and the same with them, goes in. A few minutes pass while we all slowly drown in the rain, then I hear an almighty racket coming from a close by hole. Theres squeeking and thumping, I peer in to the hole expecting a rabbit in the face but what I see is two scrapping ferrets going hammer and tongs. So carefully we extracate the ferrets and decide to work mine and thies seperate from then on. By this time we are all covered in mud and leaves, and dripping wet, although it has now stopped raining so hard. We put my two back in the set and stand about........ nothing. They come up and go back in, it's like this for ten minutes, so we decide to try theirs in and mine come out. The polies go in (I don't know which as they all looked the same to me, very nice all the same), and to their credit they didn't reappear for ages but no action. We then decide to move on and up nets to the next set, which looks as promising as the last due to all the leaves that fell last night. This time we start with their ferts, and we put three down, by this time the rain has picked up again :good: Again waiting around and nothing, mine go in and the same, so we move on. As we are making our way to the next set I spy a bunny at the top of the embankment run in the opposite direction from us to the first bury we worked.

The next set another ten/eleven holer, and as we net up a rabbit bolts from one of the holes :( . My two go down first, this time almost imediatly bugs bolts, bang clean in the net :D , two minutes pass and another :clapper: Then all goes quiet and my ferts are in and out for a good few minutes, so I put them in thier box and we enter three of the polies, they're down for ages and I'm just starting to think that we've got all we're going to when another comes out from the same hole as the first. It must be a deep set and those polies worked it well.

After another couple of minutes we decide to move on again, just to the other side of what was the track. This time a small seven holer, not expecting much we entered a couple of the polies, and they did their work bolting one. Then we moved on as the sun began to appear, the next bury was a good twenty six holes and I knew one was down there as the one that bolted earlier went down there. We netted and then sent in the troops. In all from this set we bolted seven, unfortunatly two slipped the net. One managed to double net its' self by back netting needless to say despite its best efforts it didn't get away, but it did cause a bit of a tangled mess. Loads of fun that set, at one point I had a rabbit in each hand and each foot down a different hole.

After the excitment we let the dust settle, had a cuppa and then let two of the polies have a last crack of the whip to mop up any leftovers but seemingly there was none. By the time they came out it was getting on and I felt it was time for tea, so we upped nets and made for home.

What had started out as a damp squib ended up as a good whizz bang and fun was had by all, I learnt a lesson about pegging nets properly :icon_redface: and the ferrets all worked supurbly and we got three bunnies a piece. But the best bit was that when I got home there was a full roast dinner waiting for me cooked by the long suffering fair handed better half :notworthy: I hope this hasn't bored you all to much, regards Dan.
