higgins 75
Cheers for the replys guys, I should of taken a picture, and I hate digging, hate it with a passion but to be honest them ferrets are like family to me now and I just could never leave a member of my team behind, it's just not morally right. JoeD Yes JoeD you really should've taken a picture, some of us are in awe of your digging prowess, you don't own a terrier by any chance and are not prone to exaggeration? Quote Link to post

I own 2 terriers neither really work but my dad brought one up when I told him to get a spade and next time if this type of thing unfortunately happens the camera will be out, just the first time was just a bit of a shock so didn't even think about it at the time. higgins 75
Ok so I went ferreting this morning and well I didn't catch anything also something that scared the crap out of me happened aswell, my ferret didn't surface for about 2 and a half hours, I would of dug a lot sooner but me being the numpty I am I forgot my spade, I called him and couldn't track him, so when i finally did track him and my dad dropped the spade off for me, I started digging, it was 9ft down it was clay and stones this soil, well it took me 3 1/2 hours roughly to dig down and then i realised that the reason he hadn't moved on is because it was a stop end and the tunnel conecting it had caved in, so I dug as quick as possible could, and when I got there I had a very lucky ferret as he would of suffocated if he had been in there much longer, he saw me and he litterally jumped at me and just was really excited to see me. Anyway sorry about no real purpose to this story but I just felt like sharing as it really did shake me up as he is my best worker. And I will now never forget my spade again and I am just so happy now he's back as I seriously thought I had lost him. JoeD just wondering JoeD you didn't mention a locator at all (unless the word 'TRACK 'is refering to a locator?)so i assume it was 9ft after you measured the hole you dug? Not only will you never forget your spade next time, you'll also have invested in a ferret locator to save time, but then why bother you did well without one this time LOL. No I must admit I didn't use a locator and was following the dogs nose i started digging up a tunnel that the dog was marking, and it just got deeper and deeper then the dog was fixed on one spot so dug down and kept going till I found it. But I will be investing in collars after todays shock. JoeD that dog of yours must have a good nose, count yourself lucky that you had him, perhaps you don't need a locator as long as that dog is out with you ,is it a terrier?Next you'll be telling us you forgot the spade, but the ferret had a locator collar on and the dog actually dug the ferret for you at 9ft or whatever, yis Higgins. dogs-n-natives 1,182
Fair play Joe thats a monster of a dig for out ferreting. But if I knew one of mine was trapped, with a locator on, id do the same (but i like digging) better than having to buy a replacement collar after all! edit... ahh ok, more like 9 foot trenching on mate, still, well done for getting it back in one piece. johnmac666 2
glad to hear you got your ferret back, a ferret locator is an essential piece of kit in my eyes ( i know lots of people who work without 1 ) have only worked mine once without a collar & 1 went AWOL for 2 hrs & then resurfaced looking at me as if to say what you panicking for ? so i bought one for peace of mind, for digging 9ft, lol i would have rang for a mini digger or a backactor Quote Link to post
JoeD 24
Ok just to clarify it wasnt 9ft straight down, it was a 9ft hole, must of been about a 6ft deep, and going in at 9ft wide. JoeD Edit to say: either way it wa s abstard to dig. Edited November 1, 2009 by JoeD Quote Link to post
