thats not true if your dog is worring a sheep cause a young lad i now from east cleveland had his dog shot for killing geese.went to police and there said he was in his right to do so.so i dont no any more.there are a law to them selves.

digger, if they were domestic geese then they will have been within their rights to do so im affraid. As the term 'livestock' covers all farm animals, including poultry, and even caged or penned gamebirds.

as i said before it does not mention ''livestock'' on my firearms cert it states ''the shooting of animals to protect other animals or humans'' think this would cover any animal that was under threat be it a rabbit ,hare ,fox ,deer ,cow ,chicken ,goose or a horse i think it would be one for the courts to decide....

if anyone ever shot or shot at any of my dogs they would wish they had not been born

Like it or not lads, if you were a keeper or farmer who is constantly being pestered by the pricks who drive threw gates, hedges etc etc- you would be wanting to resolve it! Its not the dogs fault its the owners who have no respect for the rest of us who work in the countryside. Poaching with dogs has never been so popular which is a shame for the rest of us who run our dogs on permission. Most land owners turn a blind eye to the odd hare or deer being run however they dont tolerate twits in scoobys ripping the feilds to bits. this is why many keepers get frustrated by the sight of lurchers near the quarry they are paid to protect! there is always 2 sides to a story and i have to deal with it on both side as im a pestcontroller on farms etc and need my dogs for my work!

No mate, your interpreting that wrong... the firearms certificate is meaning the shooting of 'wild' animals to protect other animals or humans... its seems a very missleading statement to me, and almost implies that you can shoot anything, to protect anything else inc humans, which is obviously not true.

The law clearly states a dog can be shot if in the process of worrying livestock, or attacking a human. So, even if the dog has come away from stock after killing or ragging, and the farmer rolls up, he cant then legally shoot it.

I STRONGLY ADVISE ANYONE WHO WANTS THE FACTS ON THESE LAWS, AND ALL OTHER COUNTRY LEGISLATION, TO BUY THE BOOK 'FAIR GAME' BY PARKES AND THORNLEY.

hello guys...........Last year an Akita dog that had been passed around a bit in my neck of the woods ended up quite close to my yard with somebody who just thought they could make a quick buck out of it. It turned on the new owner pulled her to the floor and tore of most of her top lip. Her husband asked me to shoot the dog as he was afraid that sombody else was going to get hurt as the dog was now in a bit of a frenzy. As i dont particualy trust these people I telephoned my Firearms officer to ask if this was ok as it was now trying to get in one of my fields with two mares and quite valuble foals so could I distroy it with my 22.250.I was informed very quickly by the head firearms officer that under no circumstance was I allowed to shoot this dog and a poilice marksman was deployed. even then he was not allowed to shoot it and they ended up tranking the dog and taking it away for disposal.I was told afterwards in no uncertain terms that the only time anyone can shoot a dog is if it is actually in the process of worying SHEEP and no other live stock or animal. I also have the same stipulation on my firearms ticket about protecting wildlife and animals but it means nothing when it comes to dogs and quite rightly so.

My advice to any one who has their dogs shot or any thret atall with a firearm is to report it to the poilice any firearm offence has to take priority over coursing a long lugs.

its very simple alot off time dogs are shot because ppl are on land they dont have premisson on or in other cases hunting a farm where u do but the hare deer fox has run so far its went on 2 another farmers land and he does not know the dog or that u are hunting the next farm over. This is where he has the right by law too shoot. In other cases its young dogs that have never seen sheep and chase them playing not knowing there doing wrong and most pups will do these until they are taugh not too thats way your better off showing a young dog sheep in a pen on the farm you have permission on with another older dog stock broken. l been out with older dogs just bought that have grabbed sheep or lamp once ok but 2nd 3rd u have a sheep killer on your hands that needs put down before u your friends and there dogs all get into alot hot water or a good beating by locals .

as said................. if a dog is running on land weather it be a pup or an old dog and with or without permission NOBODY in England out side the poilice force has the right to shoot it unless it is in the progress of worrying SHEEP regardless of wether he is a huntsman, farmer or the duke off edinburgh for that matter.

Shooting a dog that is not in the progress of worrying SHEEP ( no other animal ) is a very serious offence and anyone caught doing it would be doing very well to keep his firearms cert providing that the complainant takes it high enough.

The law definately covers ALL livestock not just sheep, 100% on that mate..... this even includes pheasants in the release pens. But your points are very true.
