The landowner is only legally entitled to shoot a dog if it is worrying livestock. That is the ONLY circumstance in which it is legally acceptable.

Youve hit the nail on the head there brummie thats what i tell the lads round here its usaually only sheep farmers that are with in there rites to shoot if your dog is on the field worrying live stock thats why i tend to stay away from any live stock fields it just aint worth the hastle lads

I had a blue gyp Stag shot last year that was in pursuit of a coyote . The ranch hand that shot her said she was chasing cattle, which she was not as the pasture she was shot in had no cattle on it in the first place.

By the time it was all said and done I was reimbursed for the dog and the guy was in the unemployment line by Monday morning. His employer was with me at the time. :icon_redface:

thats not true if your dog is worring a sheep cause a young lad i now from east cleveland had his dog shot for killing geese.went to police and there said he was in his right to do so.so i dont no any more.there are a law to them selves.

just err on the side of caution guys it states on my firearms certificate that the firearm can be used for ''the shooting of animals for the protection of other animals or humans'' this is the exact wording it does not say livestock and i think all the keeper would have to say is that he approached you to tell you to keep your dog under control and put it on a lead as per the countryside access code and your dog went for him so he shot it ........your word against his and you better believe that he would have a witness if he was approaching any one with his rifle

WHY ? sorry just realised i've started to do what i was trying to hi light and that is squabbling amongst ourselfs .CHALKWARREN I aimed the comment at the topic starter who was telling us about the shooting of lurchers he did not witness ,and as most lurcher men know each other in their area i am surprised that he could not check out the facts with his mates and post the shooting of lurchers as a fact and not as hearsay atb.
