ellir0305 9
after reading jasper 65's post on reviving his old springer i have been inspired; i have a beaten up old bsa meteor in the shed which i was iven in bits and duly put back together. it is a great little plinker but needs some tlc. list of problem: stock is stratched to buggery, needs i think sanding down and oiling. but im not sure of the process or the best oil. the reciol pad falls off so needs gluing with something (best glue anyone?) the breech of the barrel is quite loose, that is the pellet goes in a fair way, is this normal with meteors? the breech also looks like it needs recrowning because of it irregular shape breech seal gone (i currently have a plumbing o ring in there which works well enough. so is it worth the hassle or should i just leave it. or does anyone have a .177 springer (around the 12ft/lbs mark) that needs some tlc? i fancy a .177 after all this time. atb rob Edited November 1, 2009 by ellir0305 Quote Link to post

ellir0305 9
ok , cleaned the cylinder and piston today and slightly over oiled, bit of smoke came out . anyway from what i can see the spring is buggered as it is all warped and the guide which its sits on needs some tlc. i was wondering what kind of power the ox spring ft/lbs wise would give in the meteor(.22, or if i put the .177 in the .22) and if it was worth spending the money on for a hunting tool. i also sanded and oiled the stock a couple of times with linseed oil and it looks awesome (so much so im considering doing it to my hw90 stock). it will ideally need a new spring and guide but i could turn a guide up ok myself aswell asa breeech seal i think it is called which seals the breech end of the barrel against thew piston output hole when it locks up. oh yeah and it doesnt have a safety catch for some odd reason, whats the best way to find out what mark it is the serial number is TE18399 if that means anything to someone on here. sorry for the disjointed post but i have a lot of questions and hopefully thereis a meteor expert on here somewhere. atb rob Quote Link to post
andy s410c 61
Well the trusty old BSA Meteor my first airgun as a teenager(mid 's) .DON'T put a ox spring in it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I did because i wanted the POWER when i finally got the bloody thing in,it was a pig to cock, the trigger went from hair to solid whenever it felt like it,the stock imploded after a dozen shots . A new stock was put on,trigger unpredictable & the recoil of a howitzer .As you've guessed by now it was a waste of time, money & dangerous. Yes i would restore the gun to it's former glory but the Meteor has never really been a full power hunting airgun however i'm sure many people who've owned one have took plenty of quarry with it,i took plenty of ferals with mine once i put a sensible regular spring back in (Only had open sights). After a while i went up market with a trusy HW35 now that was a gun . gollum 1
Funny old world, I've been helping a farmer friend rip out an old shed this week, its piled up with stuff going back to 1940's....found old newspapers talking about WW2 and old tools going back even further. Amongst the boxes we found...a BSA Meteor! Stock dry as a bone and missing a chunk, and the barrel locked solid. Anyway, he didnt want it so gave it to me to restore Got the barrel breaking after a couple of hours with wd40 & patience, and it fires ok. I was thinking same as you, bigger better spring and use it as a spare to have always to hand in the land rover. After Andy's post maybe I wont bother with a pokey spring but Im going to take it to be looked over by a local airgun expert and see what he reckons. I'll put a pic up later when I get a mo. HH. G. ellir0305 9
well ive ordered some genuine bsa breech seals today of evil bay for a princely sum of £3.10 so once i have them fitted it should be fine, the stock is looking great and although the spring looked a bit warped the gun is still putting some oldschool eley wasps striaght through beer tins at 15 yards which aint too bad might still turn up a nice nylon spring guide and top hat to let the spring rotate on compression and release which will in theory give a faster and smoother release of pressure. atb with your meteor gollum and i think this pack of seals has three in so if i have one left and you need one i will send you one up regards rob Quote Link to post
