How to cure a hide

Shot my first deer ever yesterday a fallow buck,was wondering as its my first i want to keep the hide aswel as the head,i have stretched it out scrapped the fat off and salted it,what else can i do to preserve it or is that enough? Cheers James B

Unless it is in hard coat ,finished the moulting process then you are wasting your time mate .Pull at a few hairs that wont be seen and if they come out in clumps then foret it .

Edited to say that if everything is fine with the skin then a cheap tanning solution is as follows [for use after the scraping process ].-

2 pints of water

20 eggs

1 box of saltpetre from chemists

This is for one fox pelt -Seperate the egg whites from the yolk and disgard the yolks. Whisk the lot together in a bucket and soak skin .Obviously increasing quantities for bigger skins .Soak for 3 days indoors [garage is fine] .Peg to dry then reverse roll [fur inwards ]for half day then roll again skin outwards .Skin will now be plyable and well preserved .Trim to suit .

my deer management teacher at college uses diesel with bicarbonate of soda mixed in he then paints it straight on and keeps it in a dry place he then paints it again after a while if its necassary. he says it smells of diesel for a while after but i have seen a few skins he has done and they are perfect.
