hi all, i am applying for my shotgun certificate in the next week and already have a cabinet, have read up on laws, safety etc but dotn know what cal to get.

my dad is applying at the same time and he is adament he wants a 20bore as he likes the feel of my uncles over under, he wants an over under aswell.

now what i am wondering is whether i should get a 12bore because admittedly i dont have a large budget, (£200-250 max) and wont have alot to spend on cartridges, i want to do some pigoen shooting, game shooting, general virmin control (rabbits etc) and i also want something i can take foxes with.

so would a 12bore be a good choice for me?

im not the biggest lad but not smallest either and have shot with all calibres from .410 28bore 20 bore and 12 bore, even 8 bore (once) and can easily take the recoil of 30grm 12bore loads all day shooting on peg.

opinions please.

p.s. this has probably been done hundreds of times so sorry.

Get the 12 mate plenty of cheap ones about 20 very good but you wont get the power for foxes from it by right you need a minimum of 40 grams of shot for fox and as far as i know you cant get shells that powerfull in the 20.

I'd agree with going for a 12 for both of you due to being able to get more for the same budget in a 12 than a 20, tho i would disagree that you need a minimum of 40 grams to shoot fox, i think the shot size makes more of a diffrence than the grams in the load.

hi, if you and your dad both get a 12g you will save a fortune by buying in bulk 20 are fine for fox but 12g is best

what do you mean by bulk? do you mean thousand at a time or say 5 thousand at a time, because we wont have alot to spend on carts, all our money is going towards my sparsholt savings for accomodation , that and mortgage etc so this is just what tiny bit we have spare.

and where is the cheast place for carts? and can you mail order carts? is that possible?

I think you should start off with a 12 bore. I have been shooting shotguns for nearly 40 years and have only in the last 5 years moved on to a 20 bore.

The 20 bore is a lighter quicker gun, great for snap shooting, but harder to shoot crossers and driven as you have to make much more of an effort to keep the barrels moving.

Incidentally everyone on our shoot has come to the conclusion that we kill as many foxes with 30gms of No5 or No6, than we do with the bigger SG or BB.

Finally 20 bore cartridges are now quite a bit more expensive than 12 bore.

Cheers

Euroguns offer 12G Kent velocity 28gm for around £125 / 1000

I have a mate who is paying £110 / 1000 in lots of 5000, not sure where from tho!

Money is always an issue and cartridges have gone up a lot in the last 2 or 3 years.

lets look at this from the financial viewpoint. 20g carts are more expensive than 12 on the whole, buying any cartridge a box at a time is expensive, if you intend to shoot clays as well and you both have a 12g you will find 1000 disappears quickly.

Do whatever you can in these circumstances to buy in as sensibly large quantities as you can!

worth a look here...
