ARMED police officers were called after an alleged shooting.

Police said officers were scrambled after shots were fired and people were forced to take cover.

It was believed a group of men from Ireland were in a shooting party on land, near Foveran, when the alleged incident broke out.

Grampian Police Armed Response Unit raced to the scene of the alleged shooting near a granite work supplier’s base on the A90 Aberdeen to Ellon road, and a man was arrested.

Owner of Bon Accord Granite John Forbes initially thought the police were carrying out a drugs raid.

The 45-year-old said: “There was a police car with two officers and a van arrived with about eight guys dressed in khaki gear.

“A short time later sniffer dogs arrived and they were sent over the hill.

“The men were aged from around 40 and seemed to be okay.

“The police left after around four hours.â€

Foveran councillor Isobel Davidson said she was shocked to see around 20 armed response officers outside Ellon Police Station.

She said: “It is horrifying. Obviously something went terribly wrong.â€

Police confirmed they were called to the Foveran area around 10.15am on Monday and a man was arrested.

Michael Sutherland, from the Ellon area, appeared from custody at Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday in connection with the alleged shooting.

The 37-year-old who was charged with culpable and reckless discharge of a firearm, made no plea and was released on bail.

Detective Inspector Stewart Kidd said: “There was a number of officers involved in the inquiry.

“A small number of which were firearm officers.â€
