I don't agree with auto's being better off road and I have tested almost every 4x4 both on and off road,

Landrover Defender by far the best off road IMO

Nissan Pathfinder by far the worst off road IMO

I had the new disco in a fairly wet field last year and it was awful to drive I know for a fact that had I been in a manual I would have pissed it out of that field.

Landrover Defender by far the worst on road IMO and I have drove some very long distances in one both new and old models

Range Rover

Range Rover sport by far the best on Road IMO.

Just my thoughts though lads

Cheers

Hi I dont think that anyone has said autos are better off road, but they are certainly not inferior to a manual - put me in an automatic Disco and I bet that I can get it anywhere you can get in a manual Disco. I would agree that Defenders are tops - all they lack is a good autobox - although the Disco autobox drops in quite nicely in place of that stick shift nonsense they come with!

Tiptronic , best of both worlds, you can't beat an automatic on long run, but need the manual for any serious off roading.

My friend has a Bmw x5, this has an automatic and sport box  Is this a tiptronic??

If it has the ability to drive it in manual as well then yes mate

It's largely just a matter of preference, automatics are much easier and more relaxing easier to drive - both in town and off road and are far better for towing. I have driven off road in various 4x4's both manual and automatic and would never have another manual - why bother with all that clutch and gear changing nonsense! Automatics will use a bit more fuel but there is no real difference in off road ability and in fact automatic gearboxes are becoming pretty much standard for high-end 4x4 - for instance the Range Rover is now only available as an auto. For off roading you can lock most auto's into the gear you need or at least stop them changing up beyond 1st or 2nd or whatever, the torque converter in an auto will also protect the drive train from quite a lot of shocks.

Like you say mate a matter of preference, but there is a world of difference in auto and manual when you are talking about serious off roading, its funny you say that about the disco, see I meant the new one, it aint available in manual and never will be, same as the R/R 4.4 V8, its seriously shit off road.

I have done 15000 miles in it since March and towed probably 8000 of them, comfort, motorway miles and power is awesome but believe me they are scared of the mud.

As far as an auto in the defender goes the 25 yr anniversary model is a V8 auto, cracking motor but only in the swb,
