Easy one that,i have a manual truck and an automatic car,the wife scares me to death when she drives the truck as she has no idea why the thing is moving :no:

 

The car she scares me to death in as she has no idea why it is moving but...........we dont weave all over the place when she changes gear,also you dont get whip lash from her gear changes either :D

 

I aren't to sure why folk dont like automatics though,we have central heating,automatic washing machines,kettles that turn themselves off and we dont believe a car can find the best gear for the right moment,strange one that. :wacko:

I know what I would buy, a manual 4x4. Definitely if offroading. If you have a steep slippery muddy/grassy bank you need to get up, you can back up whack, it in low gear, diff lock, put it in second or third gear, rev the arse of it and go for it - and you wont need to change gear half way up, something the automatic might try and do.

 

But if it is for a quick jaunt down a country lane with the dogs and wellies in the back, and parking in a muddy field once in a while either would do the trick. :D

Tiptronic , best of both worlds, you can't beat an automatic on long run, but need the manual for any serious off roading.

 

 

My friend has a Bmw x5, this has an automatic and sport box :blink: Is this a tiptronic??

 

 

It's largely just a matter of preference, automatics are much easier and more relaxing easier to drive - both in town and off road and are far better for towing. I have driven off road in various 4x4's both manual and automatic and would never have another manual - why bother with all that clutch and gear changing nonsense! Automatics will use a bit more fuel but there is no real difference in off road ability and in fact automatic gearboxes are becoming pretty much standard for high-end 4x4 - for instance the Range Rover is now only available as an auto. For off roading you can lock most auto's into the gear you need or at least stop them changing up beyond 1st or 2nd or whatever, the torque converter in an auto will also protect the drive train from quite a lot of shocks.

i reckon the main difference is when an auto 4x4 gets down into my price range, if an auto box plays up, it can cost more than the trucks worth to fix, but manuals are a bit more staight forward. yours from the driver of a 14 yr old auto toyota hilux surf ! (not scared...)

Auto's are without a doubt the best thing since sliced bread when it come's to long run's and driving around town... but fuel consumption is slightly higher than a manual and when you get stuck and bogged down in a field you are fecked because you cant use the clutch to rock the veichle backwards and forwards as you can with a manual..plus you have one more dip stick to check on an auto.. :D ..

How many burnt out clutches do you change for every auto gearbox? I have found autos to be cheaper to maintain and far more reliable than manuals (subarus/discos/rangies/ toyotas) True you cant rock them but carry a spade and a couple of sheets of cardboard in the back to sort out that problem. After 8 or 9 years in autos it just seems like a no-brainer to me, I just cant imagine now why anybody could be arsed with all that clutch and gearleaver shit.

Auto gearbox by and large are only slightly dearer than manuals now (check your local autotrader to see what I mean)- they last longer than manual gearboxs and most people with manual gearboxs will have replaced several clutches - often at considerable cost and have a tired gearbox before an autobox with the same mileage on it needs any work (assuming off road shockloads havent destroyed the manual box first) chillit would be a good example with a 14 year old autobox in his Hilux Surf!
