hi guys just got myself a lab pup (bitch) its my 1st dog and i really am keen on training her up because i need and want a gundog.

just tryin to train her to pee on paper just now. ive heard about people training too early and i dnt want to do that.

thing is when should you start training her to sit and other things?,

any help would be great shes only 8 weeks tomorrow.

im in the same situation as you a few weeks further advanced (14weeks old springer/collie) i had a long thread a while back before i got the dog which might be useful to you if you can find it with trhe search function.

 

as a very general rule formal training starts around six months onward so a while yet. but my advice to you from my recent experiences is walk and play with the pup as much as possible to create a strong bond, take it slow and let the pup like the lead, dont be heavy handed it takes a long time to correct. get some good books from the library (you will often need to order them in). start to build the recall and play fetch with a tenniss ball but dont over do it as the pup will get bored easy.

 

short sessions is key as is plenty of exercise, when you feed her get her bowl of food and let her dance round your feet, eventually she will sit down lookig up at you, at this point say SIT in an encouraging tone and immediately reward with her food . after a few days she will both sit and wait for her tea to be served and after a week or so will start sitting whilst out and about. with a little perseverance and patience she will get it quickly, which is really useful whilst out walking and around the home. mines 14 weeks and sits well to command already.

 

but dont rush and enjoy it most of all! good luck with your pup

no ellir0305 your no idiot mate some good advice

they do sit best for food and is the best way to start it training, just remember feritting1888 all dog,s are differant and move and learn at differant speeds don't rush things i'm on my 5th gundog now it's a 6 month old lab pup his basic training is spot on but he wont retrieve anything at all. there is no set time to start or stop training your dog. 10 min's a day is better than hrs a day he will get fed up if you do to much at once. if you want to put me as a friend you can PM me, i will help if i can in the future.

sound advice,as with any pup keep it fun. its very rewarding when a little cracker like yours starts trying to please YOU

mine is now nearly 5 months and teething and so a bit contrary. but coming on well( he is scared of nowt and loves other dogs and kids,not so much the cats ).

i don't know much about labs( i had a labxpointer up untill a couple of years ago) but the ones i have known were great companions,hard workers and pleasant to be around.

how is yours bred if you don't mind me asking?

How is she bred,they meen what lines are they in her pedigree,is she of trialing stock etc.good luck and dont be in a hurry let her be a pup

A lot of gun dogs will retrieve quite naturally, even at 8 weeks old. You can make it more formal and tidier as she matures. In the meantime, play with a small toy and encourage her to come to you with it. Also, if she comes tottering towards you carrying one of your best shoes, a sock, gloves, the post, remote control, or anything else you left in her reach, she's a "Good Girl", call her in and take the item sounding pleased. Never tell her off for bringing you things. I sometimes see dogs working gun dog tests, who almost creep in with the retrieve article looking really apprehensive, and I just wonder how it was trained?

Just let her be a pup and do a bit of basic training until she is about 4 months, then start with some fun hunting and retrieving games.

Like dogdigger said 10 mins a day is all she will need, she will respond well to it and not get bored and after just one week on a particular subject you will see a big difference.

Get yourself a good training DVD and you wont go wrong (Holland and Holland do a good one).
