If your wanting them at there biggest then deffo Jan and Feb just before there getting ready to spawn, time of day can very with the venues you fish 1 place i go to you can more or less guarante a run between the hours of 10.30 and 12.00 don't ask me why as i haven't got a bloody clue! other venues first and last light, but always use top quality bait and you shouldn't go far wrong

I would never encourage anyone to target Pike just before they spawn. I have fished for pike for the past twenty years and have caught many large Pike, and most of them were caught during the summer months, so it’s still possible to catch them outside the spawning months.

Dead baits account for a large amount of the larger Pike taken in Irish waters, I use love to use live bait but it’s banned over here, so its deads all the way for me. I suppose it’s all about putting in the hours on known waters that hold large Pike, hours on the bank will result in Pike on the bank.

Good Luck.

Is herring and mackrell good baits aswell folks?

Frank.

Alright Frank,

If I was to use only one bait for the rest of my angling career it would have to be mackrel, one of the most under rated bait around today, even on hard fished waters you can use food dye on the mackrel to fool the pike into taking the very same bait that they refused the week previous. Great all round bait.

This is a nice river Pike taken on ha;f mackrel.
