Gale Force Bunnies

Hi people of the great Hunting Life Forum (HLF),

I me up with Reggaeman, Wuzzy and his brother in law Heiko who had come over from Germany for a weeks visit at my house yesterday.

The weather wasn’t very good due to heavy rain and cross winds so I made them a cup of tea while I showed them the 31 minutes of edited footage that I have now for the DVD.

After our tea we headed off to the farm where I shoot ferals for the owner. Typically there were no flying rats about apart from the usual tonne of pruned feathers that lined the barn floor telling me that the pigeons are still there at night just chilling out and sorting out their feather after a hard days wheat stealing. (Ill plan a early morning raid soon and give them another early morning wake up call) ;) .

Next we ventured into a new field that I have been saving for when the lads come up. I wanted to give them the feel for the lay out of the land so later when we lamped it they had the boundaries and obstacles logged in their minds.

After a half hour walk around we drove to my zero range and we all ensured that our combos were zeroed perfectly and smashing 10 spots and 30 metres. Heiko Wuzzies brother in law managed to borrow a HW77 which had just been stripped and tuned and was very accurate. It was also very quiet to say that it had no silencer fitted. After I had check zeroed my gun I let Reggaeman have a try with it from the bipod. What I did was to find a small washer about the same size as a 10 pence piece and rested it on top of a sweeping brush handle 30 metres down the range against the wall as a safe back stop. I asked him to shoot at the washer to see if he could hit it. (No small feat in itself). Well Reggaeman bettered my expectations by putting the pellet straight through the middle of the washer without touching the sides of it. Basically he put a FX 16 grain pellet through a hole the size of a pellet with a 1/2mm give. I was happy with that and so were the boys. (The good old BSA R10 does it again) :whistling: .

Next we went to look for some squizzers; I and Reggaeman saw 2 just sat on the floor chilling out in a small wooded area. Something spooked them though and they bolted up a tree and away. We decided to have a walk around as it was starting to get over cast again and dark with the wind getting up. We wanted to make the most of the last bit of day light. Reggaeman bagged a squizzer sat on the floor eating its supper. It didn’t know that lead was on the menu too. He also shot a woody sat in a tree, The Ultra .177 pellet drilled straight though and it was a little while before it new it was in dia need of some first aid  .

As the light faded and rabbits were bolting out in front of us at 15 metres that we didn’t see due to the fading light we decided to go back to the car and get ready to lamp.

With the lamp fitted and us doing our usual drive by snipping, Joey managed to christen the new Falcon on a bunny’s skull. The bunnies on my permission didn’t realise that not only owls were flying about on my permission, but also a light weight Falcon was hunting its prey.

After a bit more of a drive around Reggaeman’s BSA Ultra came out to play and it was lights out for more bunnies.

This is where our big problem started. (The wind). It got up and was blowing real strong. Pellets were being blown off course and at one stage a shot was taken at 15 metres with 4 mil dots left hand side and it still missed the bunny altogether.

We decided to try the new field and see if it was out the wind due to the trees in it. The only problem was is that the bunnies were all sitting in the adjacent field where no trees were and the wind was blowing a gale. We must have seen 15 to 20 bunnies sitting in this field and they were not lamp shy letting us get up on them to within 15 to 20 metres. By this time Festa and Marksman met up with us. With me lamping and 5 guns shooting the wind was so strong that not 1 bunny was shot. (Those bunnies will be dealt with later) :boxing: .

We decided to go back to my old permission and try around the building where the wind wasn’t so strong. With a lot of effort and perseverance Reggaeman, Wuzzy and Heiko managed to cleanly shoot more bunnies.

We ended at about 0100 hrs as the wind was just blowing a gale.

7 bunnies, 1 woody and a squizzer that manage to jump deep into the brambles with its nerves so we couldnt retrieve it :wallbash:

Thank you Sweeney mate

Yeah Chris certainly can shoot mate.

He also did the shot of the night again by hitting a rabbit in the brain at about 30 metres out of most of the wind and the AA field went straight through the bunnies far side eye taking some of the brain matter with it.

As you can imagine the bunny didnt run off :whistling:

The quote of the night went to me again for my saying of " That bunny is sneaking off like a sneaking thing". I didnt think it was that funny or out of the ordinary but it tickled the lads :stupid:

another great night and write up zini.

Bill the R10 belongs to zini but yes i shot with it. i was really impressed with the shot myself ;)

Zini has got a cracking combo there and i'm glad i didn't let his trusty R10 down lol lol.

I have to say though, each time we meet up with zini he does come out with some cracking statements( you know what i'm talking about si lol lol ). your choice of words really tickled me yet again mate!!!

Anyway like i say it was a great night again even though it was windy as hell and raining and it was nice to see festa and marksman again( even if it was for a short time ).

Si did you get the owl on video or did you just take a pic of it? i bet Dylan was well pleased eh?

Also i loved the dvd you've done and it was great to see your "little terrorist" again. i cant help it mate i just love him.

well thats me out so peace out all and enjoy the read :clapper::clapper:

Regards

Chris

ps. Si. i stick by what i said last night. "you have eyes like a s*it house rat" lol lol

pps. Heiko had a really good time up at your permission and i'm sure i speak for wuzzy too when i say a big thankyou for allowing us to bring him up with us. We took some pics of him with the bunnies when we got home so he can show freinds and family when he returns home(without photographic evidence they wouldn't believe him).

Great write up Si mate

A typical night I suppose.....just my luck to eventually get down to see you guys again and the wind was horrendous....... 25-30mph sidewinds arent good!

Especially on that bunny I had 2 goes at, got round the expert lamping skills of Zini within 20m of the bunny, scoped up, 2 mildots right windage and let the first shot off only to find it landing 2-3m to the left of it. Luckily it had only spooked it a few metres so scoped up again, this time 5 1/2 mildots right windage placing the pellet at the feet of the bunny spooking it for good.

Had I only raised the holdover to 1-2 mildots it would have been mine!

Don't worry....they'll keep for another day!

Thanks again to Si for the chance to get down onto the permission and Joey & Chris to shoot with you guys again.

Here's till next time!

Dont worry guys the bunnies that were snaeaking like a sneaking thing in that wind will save for another night ;) .

Its like living on deaths row for them bunnies and getting that last minute legal save before they are killed. The save was the wind but tomorrow is a different day :whistling:

Lets see how they sneak with a .22 FX through the brain. The only sneaking they will be doing is to the cemetary :clapper:

Thanks for coming up guys, its always a pleaseure to shoot with you all and have a crack. I did get the owl on video Chris and have turned it into a JPEG picture. Dylan was impressed your right.

Ive started saving mate for my next gun. Yes you have guessed it a .177 calibre tactical stocked single shot BSA Ultra.

Im sticking a little Nikko Stirling 4 -16x44 scope on it and either a SAK or Hogan Desimeator on it to keep it small and light but SEXY SEXY SEXY.

Zini out.
