Rubbish cage trap and an unlucky mink .

Recommended Posts

Caught a few mink for a customer a while back and suggested -bad businessman that I am- that they really ought to get at least one trap of their own as they kept poultry and were surrounded by prime mink bandit territory-river ,ditches and carp ponds .

I assured them that their little budget rat cage-trap really would'nt be up to the job.

This afternoon the phone rang and I was faced with a 20 mile round trip to dispatch the mink they'd caught.

What had they caught it in ? You guessed it ,the poxy rat cage . What's more the thing was'nt even deliberatly set and contained no bait !

When they compared the body to the length of the trap the customers did realise that it was a fluke that the door had'nt dropped onto the mink's back thus allowing it to reverse to freedom . The mink must have been as bemused as I at its situation as it obviously had'nt realised just how weak the door mechanism was and had made no attempt at escape .

One very unlucky mink.

Best point out for anyone not familiar with these little rat cage traps that they are not suitable for mink and that this was a fluke catch & no doubt given time the animal would have broken out .

I'd boil out the skull and mount it.:blink:

Is that a weird thing to do???

Mounting it ? most definitely :icon_eek:

Whilst I have no intention of mounting it (maybe when it was still warm :whistling: ) I am actually going to try to save the skull -something for the grand-childrens school nature table . I had a little collection of skulls but gave then to an artist friend who made a really spooky gothic sculpture with candles and dripping wax .

may sound stupid but is there diff colours of mink if so which is rarer

Most seem to be almost black with the little white chin marking . I've caught a couple that I suppose you'd describe as light pastel blue -a bit like the bluish colour in a merle collie . A local chap who used to follow the mink hounds has a mounted head of a beige one .

It's only a guess but I'd hazard that white mink are probably the rarest in the feral state because I believe that due to birth defects they were quite hard to breed even in the hands of professional fur farmers .
