Day Four.

Recommended Posts

Up to now this season, the weather has been decent, (maybee a little hot at times) but dry. Every day out last season seemed to be dry, (plenty of days out in the snow, which was cold but dry).

Today was return to the norm, cold, wet and windy!

Got up there early as usual, but had to wait whilst it came light for half an hour or so, looking through the gloom and mist, only a light drizzle at this point!

Tucked into the flask of soup whilst I collared up, know why I take it on days like this!

Three grouse dropped in just 20 yrds away, they came closer for a look!

They were soon off again into the mist though!

Me and the old feller took the three runners again, plus five ferrets just in case the forecast was wrong and we could get a good day out of it, but it wasn't to be. As we started the rain got heavy, along with the mist making it hard work. A lot of the ground covered was also barren. We are not ones to give up though, so as clinical as ever, covered it and took what we could.

By 11 am we had around 8 rabbits, (only missing 1). You could expect maybee 30 at this point off this land, but as is the case over most of the land this year, they are thin on the ground.

The ever present mixi has hit it hard here, plus found the sign's of the odd feral around.

Used one jill out of the five ferrets I took. No probs with her, she's the biggest jill I have and takes some stick!

Uppercut! No wonder some ferrets dont get stuck in!

Had one dig which has to be some sort of record for me, only a 3 footer, but in the 4-5 mins which it took to get to the jill, she had done the job.

The young dogs worked without faultering until dinner, but you could see the wet and cold was having an effect on them, so we put them in the truck.

Took the old dog out for an hour then. He did well for a 10 yr old. Got a few runs, and missed a few. But gave it some effort! Dont mind a dog missing if he gives it 100%.

Ended up with 29 rabbits at 1pm. As I say, they are thin on the ground, plus the weather was a pig. Suppose we had better get used to it!
