derry boy 2
I have recently got myself a .222 rifle without a scope. Now I know my own shooting abilities would limit me to shooting around the 150 to 200 yard mark with the gun so with that being said I now need to decide what would be a suitable scope for this gun and range. I would be shooting charlie with this gun most of the time whilst lamping. I have £200 to spend give or take. All advice welcome Quote Link to post
jamie g 17
a bushnell scope could be had for that sort of money. 5x15x50. good amount of mag if needed. but most of all clear glass is important when shooting under lamp. zero around 1 inch hight at 100 and your pretty much be on to 200 yards with out aimming off. 40 grain bullets will work a treat Quote Link to post

I hope this is not a stupid question. Quote Link to post

Deker 3,478
I have recently got myself a .222 rifle without a scope. All advice welcome You will also need a decent lamp for 200 yard night shooting, and, as has been said, the scope needs to be clear at whatever mag suits the occasion. My Tracer Max Lamp is meant to be good for 400yards, and whilst it is certainly OK for the VAST amount of shots I want to take at night I would not trust it much past 200 yards (and MUCH less with a Red Filter)! Many less expensive scopes are great in Daylight, Terrible in twilight and acceptable under the lamp (a good lamp that is). Difficult to tell this in the shop usually! I wouldn't be arguing with anything Jamie has said! Edited October 24, 2009 by Deker Quote Link to post

All advice welcome To get the best light transmission you need the diameter of the objective lens in mm to be 7 times the magnification. So the 8x56 mentioned above by Andy fits the bill, as would a 6x42. The other benefit of the 7:1 ratio is that it gives you a wide field of view which helps with fast target acquisition. You won't be needing high mag for Charley up to 200m at night so Andy's advice makes sense! Any decent brand in 8x56 should do the biz. RicW Quote Link to post
