Terrier Collars?

Recommended Posts

Have been asked to make a few collars for Patterdales, but thought it best to ask on here what you lads would want from a collar..............

No, I can't make them that give hand relief!

Am thinking that 1.5" wide would be best, with a minimum of shiny bits on, maybe 4 or 5 ply for strength, with a removable D ring or loop so it would just leave a flat collar with just a buckle and nothing that could snag anywhere?

Obviously they need to be hard wearing, washable etc.

Any other suggestions?

First 5 that add suggestions can have a free one when I get the design right, in return I'd ask for honest feedback on here on the quality etc, if they're shite then say so!!!

Terriers only though please, am not giving 26" Bulldog collars away!!

Oh yeah ..................

And this isn't a crap attempt at getting addresses for dodgy purposes

Hopefully someone will come along and vouch for my discretion.

All the best.

Hi I would recommend stitching the collars together, I would never buy a collar that isn’t stitched. I see stitching on collars and leads as a sign of strength ;) Iv had to many collars that have been held together by those metal studs and have ended up failing when put under pressure. And use good quality brass or bronze D rings as iv also had cheap collars with low quality metal D rings crack or split when a strong dog pulls! Hope this helps ;)

Good luck

Thanks to the first 2.

Just to clear something up, I don't make leather collars, I have made a few in the past but they are too time consuming and expensive to make properly and I don't like shortcuts!

I make all my gear from British made webbing, and the fittings are all made in England too.

Was thinking along the lines of this:

38 mm wide, this one is 5 ply, but that might be a bit of overkill?

I have so far only used steel fittings, that are nickel plated, haven't had any back so far ..............

I haven't used brass because it is softer and less hard wearing, but if it was brass you wanted ........ Then I would of course have to have a mooch for some decent quality brass fittings.

Thanks.

i wouldn`t bother putting any "removable" loops or d-rings on them to prevent snagging mate. The only collar someone would use on a loose dog is a locator collar in case the dog went to ground.Just make them as strong as you can because some of those terriers can be a bit fiesty :11:

As wintton says about the D ring have it brass or another metal that will be rust resistant and can take wear, i have one of them collars where the metal is dipped in some shyney meltal coat that has flaked off with little wear has started to rust. Also use strong thread where the stiching is so over time with wear and tear it doesn't start to come un-stiched. How about a soft material or leather under neath so it is a comfy fit and won't rub on the dogs skin. And keep it looking as simply and plain as possible were looking at the dog not the collar ;)

Ok chaps, well we're certainly getting somewhere now!

So I need to use either brass or stainless steel fittings, on a plain coloured collar, (have got bright Orange here already ;) )

Now, the Strongheart link ...............

I have got myself in trouble in the past for making comparisons with a certain other European manufacturer ...

So won't be doing that again!

But, is 15 Euros expensive for a collar?

That's 10 quid, now assuming the collars will last a couple of years at least, (mine had better last that long!!) then is that still considered expensive?

If it is then I'll get my coat and bother you no more!

I was thinking of around the £10 mark for them, including post which costs about £1.80, but will have to check the prices and availability of brass fittings before I open my big gob!

The man who asked about a harness, I'll make whatever you want mate, I already make 2 types of harness, the "roadwork" one might be what you're looking for?

I haven't so far lined any collars with anything, only because the more complicated and fancy you make it the more there is to go wrong, I have been asked about lining Bull collars in the past but haven't so far, but again, never say never!

If I was to make the retaining loop metal, the problem I have had in the past is that the free end of the collar slips out very easily, since I have been using a webbing loop they have been better collars (as told by customers not just M.O.) so am not sure on that one.

Thanks for the pm's too fellas, will reply to all later on, just having 10 minutes!

they look good do those ........if you did them as singles and had the bits to make them into couples (couples with one removed so it can be a single) just an idea ...........seems to me to be spot on oh and makes sure there are plenty of holes so the size can be adjusted right down too ......not all dogs have great ferkin necks .......yis fellman

HI, COULD YOU DO THEM IN A SMALLER WIDTH (1").MOST OF THE COLLARS I BUY FOR MY TERRIERS ARE TO LONG , TO MUCH FLAPPING AROUND AFTER THE LOOP ,SO THEY CHEW IT, SO DIFFERENT LENGTHS WOULD BE GOOD. COULD YOU DO LEADS ASWELL. JACKO AGE 13.
