Guest j-c Posted August 30, 2006 Report Share Posted August 30, 2006 just found the place and i wanted to say hi, or sommit equaly as original. i'm in the process of getting a companion to keep me company when i'm out mooching, camping, hiking etc, etc. hopefully one that'll help provide a bit on the menu so we have to carry less :whistle: ... any suggestions will be gratefully received! i do have a softspot for gundog or terrier crosses , although nothing is set in stone. Cheers N. good point! i'm in norfolk at the moment, but for how long i dont know , looking into a move north of the border in the near future. i spend a fair bit of my time in scotland (central/west) and the occasional mini-exped to sweden :thumbs-up: + weekends away where ever i can get. norfolk is pretty dam flat with a whole load of open ground, slight undulations and scattered/sporadic woods. scotland is woods and hills, sometimes at the same time . i'm after a mooching buddy in all honesty Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Pre-ban these dogs had been carefully bred to kill hares on big land and many would kill on small fields as well and many of them would also lamp very well and adapt to other kinds of work. If you are just into mooching and bushing then almost anything with a fair bit of greyhound (3/4 grey/1/4 collie for instance or perhaps a bedlington/grey) in it will do, personally I'm not fond of small whippety lurchers and generally in the past have advised against these on the grounds that bigger dogs are much more versatile but if its only rats and rabbits then one might have to reconsider.....although a 25lb bedlington/whippet might be slightly on the small size for tackling a 1000lb of Swedish Elk! As an alternative to a saluki cross especially given your impending move north, you could have thought of a deerhound/greyhound - these would certainly have come into their own if you wanted to do bigger game as well. Deerhound/greys wont kill hares as well as the top line-bred saluki cross coursing dogs but are very versatile and when it was still legal did well on larger game, especially antlered game and stuff that bites. Of course this is all theoretical now and only of historic interest to those of us still living in 'Blair's Britain' rats and rabbits are all we can legally hunt and I'm sure that like the rest of us you are a completely upright citizen and would never even contemplate breaking the law no matter how irrational, unjust and oppressive it is!
