Live trapping foxes

Recommended Posts

I have trapped quite a few foxes here in the states. The type of bait you are using though may depend on the kind of trap you intend to use. Are you using a cage style live trap? If so, a meaty bait such as sardines, rabbit, or chicken would work best. You may want to try and use a soft catch leghold type trap as well (first check if they are legal as regulations vary from place to place). If you use this style of trap, you would be best off using a lure in conjunction with a dirt hole set.

The Dirt Hole set

The dirt hole set is one of the most effective sets for land trapping. It is made by digging a small hole in the ground and hiding a trap in front of the hole. The hole itself will attract the attention of an animal. Bait and lure placed in the hole will add additional attraction's to the set. Any of the land-dwelling furbearers can be taken in a dirt hole set. The dirt hole set is especially effective for fox and coyotes. If you are trapping for fox or coyote, some fox or coyote urine applied to the backing will help attract these animals.

Steps for Making a Dirt Hole Set

Select a good backing for the set.

Dig a hole that slants underneath the backing.

Dig a bed in front of the hole for your trap.

Bed the trap and cover it.

Put bait in the bottom of the hole and cover it.

Put lure on the edge of the hole.

If you are trapping for fox or coyotes, put urine on the backing (optional).

for places that sell padded jaw legholds try:

For lures try this place, I have had luck with K-7, and Grey Ghost on Red Foxes:

Like I said, check if this is legal, but I will say that this method of trapping foxes works for me.

Hope this helps

Yer, great response to a guy  actually giving some alternative's- albeit from the other side of the pond.

And yes there is more than one way to live capture and fox, not just a cage !!

How about a snare, how about the collarum (which BPS or 120-2 is trialling) !!

Its a pretty good guess that the OP was talking about cage trapping, but its not specifically mentioned, so give the guy a break for a useful post. You never know we might learn something from it....

Thanks Fenlander....yes there are a couple of different ways to live trap foxes though....like I said, as far as cages go, it seems that most any kind of meat/animal bait would work such as chicken, fish, rabbit or beef....are these foxes really used to people and going after trash? If they are you might want to try just plain table scraps and other kinds of food that they might be going after in your garbage. If they are country foxes and not too used to people though, you might be best off just using chickens and rabbits and more natural types of bait.

Stubby, your man is describing a foot hold set, not legal in UK but interesting all the same.

Much controversy over foot holds but there is lots of pro propoganda on the www. to counter antis in the US which show many releases where the target animal is released and hurtles away showing not the slightest limp or carrying a leg.
