iceman001979 1,316
just let them be pups but start training early like bring things back stay sit things like that at about 5 months but let them chase and play so there bones and stuff get strong start jmp trianing about 5 months as well walls something they can get a grip dont show they rabbits until all this is getting done and prop at about 9 months bring them out with an older dogs keep them on the led and just let them watch then after a few times let them off with the big dogs 2 learn there trade Quote Link to post
Cold Ethyl 63
I generally spend the first year letting the pup have a childhood type idea and doing the basics training the usual stuff plus retrieve etc then go on to the more serious matter off getting the dog to work.9 months sounds good to me do it too early you risk boring the dog and fecking up its growth plates and bones leave it a bit later when the dogs fully grown and you dont have those problems. chartpolski 24,042
Two months ago, according to some of the "experts" on here !!! LOL !!! Seriously, I have a 3 month old pup, and I'll be starting her next season, when she's 10 - 12 month old. Starting them to early causes all sorts of problems, both physically and mentaly. Cheers. Cochyn 0
I have a 9 month old whippetxbedlingtonwhippet, grey, when he was 6 months old i took him lamping with my mates dogs just letting him watch to get him keen, also when then other dogs brought the rabbits back that still had a bit of life left, we d let him chase and play with it.I used this method up until he was 8 months old then id find him sitters but at this stage its important not to over do it,may be just 1 or 2 SITTERS a night. Now im at the stage where its mainly still sitters but the odd sensibly long slip(not miles). He is still very young so i dont run the granny out of him,its easy to get carried away when at this stage the dog is doing well but dont, retain youself from this as it could cost you your dogs future.Go easy, keep him keen, plenty of exercise and if you like try my way it works for me.ATB J50 Does the dog retreive to hand at that age? Is he soft mouthed and, if so, was he from the outset? My 7 month old bitch caught a rabbit while we were out for a walk and killed it before retrieving. That was her frst run, all be it accidental.
