I had one back in the early seventies, he was a complete allround dog, stood 26" ((( sorry take out the charlies I never bothered with them )) and he would swim the river, from one side, to the other, with the cord in his mouth of the shackle net we used on the rivers in those days, the amount of hares he took single handed, I wish I had a dog today as good as he was, speed, stamina, brain, and temperament, was second to none, I bred him to a coursing bitch, but he left nothing like himself,

A lad i know who raced greyhounds had a litter about 20 years ago "accidental mating" a lab found its way into his pen and lined one of his bitches, she only had 3 pups so he gave 2 away to pet homes and decided to keep the other bitch on for the craic, the pup turned out a cracker and thats how this lad got hooked on running dogs, the bitch took all quarry and was worked very hard, his freezers were always full, later he put a saluki grey over her and all that litter made the grade, the bitch he kept was well known as golden gob and rightly so, the lad still has the same line now an he's never had a bad one, a lab lurcher of the right type in the right lads kennel can bring alot to the table imo mate. ;)

Saw one about 20 years ago. A local lad had him and used him for a bit of everything with success. He was a stunning looker , pretty much a greyhound although a tad heavier with a strong head.

you dont live near wisbech by any chance do you?My brother had one then called Josh did a bit of everything, sired by a sandringham dog looked like a slightly heavy black greyhound the two lurchers he has had since have never matched upto him in my brothers eyes

cant see them being much fun lamping remember there instinct is to hunt by scent not sight so if they missed quarry on the run they MIGHT hunt it up by nose more than other crosses but all crosses have a nose so this will happen with any cross just more chance of it in a gundog cross imo... robbie

Beddy wheaton and bull all hunt nose down so I'm sure it wouldn't be much of a problem.

yes your right mate but none of them have a nose half as good as a lab they have been bred for that type of work for years so im just saying its an instinct that might cause hassle on the lamp if they keep missing which a half cross lab could as they would be abit slow for rabbits and if a tested cross could yap or start pulling up if it missed it when the quarry hits cover to many times while its young im sure a lab cross would be more than happy hunting up in any cover any time of the night!!! i personally think the collie, bedo, saluki, deerhound, wheaton and bull crosses are the only crosses thats worth kenneling they are the tried and tested xs over many years and each man or woman has a different cross to suit them now without adding any other breeds to the mix!!.. robbie
