John-B 4
"ANY" dog will be a good marker providing it has a bit of common sense and a nose, My flat coated retriever used to be a gundog but took to ferreting probably beter than he was a retriever LOL Quote Link to post

col g 0
good old bouncer .i use lurchers for my ferreting/marking work.i have a 9month old pup that was learning the trade very well until illness has put a block on me training the pup further .i retired my old dog off last season at the ripe old age of 12.she was a very good rabbit dog in her day and had a good nose on her.she used to love her trips away with bouncer.they made a very good team, they both marked setts very well and especially liked marking rabbits in the stone walls.i used to like this aswell as my arms are only skinny so i used to get most of the jobs of extracting them which used to be really funny sometimes toby the new pup sally Edited October 20, 2009 by col g Quote Link to post
Malt 379
Not fussed on the breed TBH, as long as it can reliably & accurately mark. My mates little JRT/Lakey Meg works great. Funny looking little thing, about 11 inch TTS with prick ears, but you can bet if she starts whining and scratching about at a hole, there's something at home. Sometimes she'll pass something that looks a cert, has a quick sniff then moves on. At first we used to think that she couldn't possibly have spent long enough there to ascertain whether there's something there, and ferret the bury regardless. She's never once been wrong... Marking like a good 'un! My little 10 1/2 inch JRT Pip isn't too bad at it either... ...but this is what happens should the hole be a certain size: Next minute she's gone! She bolted a rabbit from that bury and it was caught by Meg who was waiting patiently at the hole the rabbit bolted from. Quote Link to post
The one 8,534
Ive used my spanniel and my lab but now weve got the lurcher we use her as she picks up the bolters as well Quote Link to post
