markp76 0
Best bit of advice i can give is go with a experienced pike fisherman the first time! Nothing worse than seeing a novice trying to unhook a pike when they havent got a clue and seeing the fish suffer! Had to step in on more than 1 occasion in the past to help, another often over looked bit of kit is a decent pair of croppers they come in handy if you do happen to get a deep hooked fish and can't remove the trebles. Coca 0
Dont forget if you are fishing deadbaits on the bottom you will need bite alarms and drop offs similar to carp fishing its only fair on the pike to save deep hooking. Also gloves [bANNED TEXT] you are unhooking big pike as the slightest graze from their teeth can make a small cut bleed like mad apparently they have an anticogulant in their bite.atb dell thanks mate totally forgot about bite alarms. atb bob You can float fish dead baits under pike floats if you havent got alarms.atb dell Well poacher,do you leave your dead bate in the one place for long when fishing fro the bank?? gundogbob 1
hi mate just a bit more advice on unhooking pike if enyone suggests using one of those gags they are like a v shaped spring for opining the pikes mouth dont use one as they can send the fish mad and get you in a real mess. just lay the pike on its back on the mat and gently slide your fingers up the gills till you touch the jaw bone just mind the delicate red gill rakers use a glove if you wish then lift the bottom jaw it will not be able to close its mouth then you can see where the hooks are and remove them. but as has already been said best to go with experinced pike anglers un till you get the hang of it as a deep hooked pike is a different kettle of fish to the un experinced good luck Quote Link to post

[bANNED TEXT] fishing a deadbait under a float i like to move about giving the float about half an hour in one spot before moving on or [bANNED TEXT] fishing a river let the bait trot under the float.atb dell Quote Link to post
fettler 2
42 inch landing net a must , as is unhooking mat and long nose forceps , start off with size 8 semi barbed snap tackle , deadbaits , sprat sardines mackerel tail herring and coarse baits , all of these pretty easy to come by ,if using ledgered baits a bite alarm with drop off indicator is a must as a sign of a pike picking up the bait as sometimes a pike will stay in same spot while mouthing bait, a float is a great way if fishing close in shallow water , a float ledgered bait is a great way to get early indication of a pick up , and gets the adreneline flowing , be confident when unhooking a pike and hold securely , look for features such as reed beds sunken trees and such and present a bait close to these . hope you enjoy and hope your piking goes well ,all the best .
