JUSTwondering if we all use the same whistle pitch on all breeds of gundogs the lads i know with spanials seem to favor 210 1/2 or 211 1/2 .i don't use a different one just for a stop whistle.some questions (1) do you think the dogs can tell who is blowing the whistle if they are all the same pitch (2) do some people use a different whistle to stop the dog .(3) how many sources of infection do you think your whistle comes in contact with (4) do you clean and sterilise yours(5) is the depth of the teeth marks in the whistle an indication of how good a trainer you are.(6) does anyone know where to get a soft rubber whistle as this bloody plastic one is killing my teeth. :whistling: sorry this has come up three times don't know how or why

i can answer one of your questions as i'm new to this lark but i was reading in a think and old copy of sporting shooter that a bloke was having the teeth trouble with the hard acme whistles (can't say ive noticed a problem tbh) so he use one of the silent acme ones with a piece of soft rubbertube pushed over the mouthpiece to save his teeth. good idea i think

Because my dog is so responsive I deliberately got a whistle different to the 2 10 1/2 2 11 1/2 as I did not want other whistles to bother him. I must confess though that I can get him to do most of what I want just by a mouth whistle which is quite handy in the frosty weather as the whistle I have is metal. Anyway it seems to work although a bit unconventional.

1: I think they get use to the style of blowing the whistle as much as the pitch, we all blow different ie speed between pips, length of single blast.

2: No cant see the point, if its trained correctley you should'nt need it.

3: Loads, mine have a habit of dangling in the dog sh#t as I bend down to pick it up, hence I now always carry 2.

4: Yes!! see above, would'nt you?

5: No, if I get a new whistle I bite hard on it to get teeth marks in it so it fits better in my mouth.

6: No sorry.

Cheers

i tried making teeth marks in my 210.5 today and it didnt mark i just really hurt my teeth. GPSdave, if you make a lanyard for your whistle out of stout cord with a single or double fishermans in it pulled fairly tight. this allows the length to be adjusted in an instant and it cant tighten around your neck accidently. i use this method (largely because i wasnt going to pay for a lanyard) and it works great, if the whistle can reach you mouth fine in all directions and the lanyard fits round your collar jobs a gooden .

and if this doesnt work ,get a long handled shit scoop :whistling:
