review on the dove rotary today

Recommended Posts

im going to do quite a detailed review on the motion dove rotory everyone is raving about on here .

are you ready ?

here goes...........

it's pants !!!!

review of motion dove rotary over.

it cant beat a magnet , as we tested these along side each other today. i think people are just trying to find a cheaper option to a magnet and this is not it.

as it is quite small bit of kit i will probably continue to use it within the pattern, well until the batterys run out lol. infact i will probably end up butchering the unit and fit longer light weight arms to give it a 6ft span

Glad you enjoyed the day mate.

True those dove thingys are nothing quite like a magnet eh!

Still waiting for Bob to collect! cant wait !!

Will have to have a look for the geese at some point.

Just out of interest Chimp what is to the NNW and North of the dove motion in the second picture I cant just make it out.

Have you not tried putting white bars on to the dove decoys to attract wood pigeon or were you trying to attract doves?

What would you say helped you most to get the amount of pigeons that you got?

apart from myself and harry buying these from the usa, I dont think they are that much cheaper than a magnet, I for one would'ent have paid the english prices Ive seen, it was bought purely as a "first step" into pidgeon decoying, along with 12 shell decoys, in my words, cheap as chips, after all I didnt want to spend loads of dosh, and find out it was'ent for me, now I find that for the shooting I do, its enough, it brings the pidgeons down, so its doing the job it was meant to do, yes a pidgeon magnet is probably going to bring much larger amounts down, but with that comes a higher price (for a decent unit) plus the lugging of battery etc,

I can see by your pictures, your a far superiour pidgeon shooting than I, and maybe if I get to a point of being able to shoot the same amounts, then Id look into more kit, but as a total beginner, I think it gets your "foot in the door"

I can answer this mate. They are two of my home made decoys!

Made out of card and painted., cheap as chips!

Very easy to make, basic but 30 weigh nothing at all. Just pegged in place with wires.

We have used them for the last three weekends and accounted for 51, 144 and the 59 today.

Have also used a magnet and the addition today of Chimps 'rotary'

At present thought they looked like some of the 'ferals' we have about but they are very small!

What would you say helped you most to get the amount of pigeons that you got?

Difficult to say really I think the mass of decoys and the magnet prob did the trick!

hi harry, believe it or not they are paper decoys and are used by a friend who has been shooting for many years and funnily enough actually did say as we were packing up that by using the paper ones you can fit 20 of them in one hand and are 'cheap as chips' and are just as good as anything out there which i totaly agree with and also it doesnt hurt his pocket as much when you get a 'completely new to decoying shooter' like myself and goes and puts a loads of holes in them :)

if you are that way inclined you could make a magnet for less then 20 quid as someone on here posted up a while ago and uses the same battery pack that you use when you go lamping.

as for white bars painted on the decoys, i think i would rather 3 pigeon full shells on the unit as the dove decoys are half the size and the unit just doesnt work a large enough area for pulling in from distance, like i said i will butcher the unit and see if it can be made into something a bit usefull

so in a nut shell not the best £25 ever paid and any other newbies should keep clear of this as this should be just an add on at a later date

MAKE YOUR SELF A MAGNET !!

Thanks for both your responses chimp and masmiffy.

Would you show us some close up photos of the card decoys please.

Would you say it is the quantity of decoys that helps sooner than the quality because pigeons are a gregarious bird and I think that if you only had a few decoys that were photo likenesses of pigeons and you but out 30 that were not perfect I think the quantity would win.

Also as soon as you have a few shot pigeons then it draws others big time to the decoys.

Time is another big factor also it depends what time of day you go and also weather conditions

What do others think?

Will get some pics soon and post.

They are not pretty but have the basice shape of a pigeon.

The downside is they aint great in a lot of wet weather being card.

Having said that I have no problems with em.

Sure having a lot of deeks out helps but as we all know dead birds are best.

We did use a magnet to get the birds close but I am sure any decoy works if they want to come in, rest is fieldcraft.

I normaly replace them one for one with dead ones as the day progresses.

If you want a pattern let me know will see what I can do.

Harry here are the pics of the decoys we used.

As I said very basic but I think you just need enough to look like a 'flock'

The paintwork could be 'tarted up' but these have worke for me on endless occasions.

A mate did make some out of 5" half round guttering years ago and they worked as well!

The white is the template once you have made a few they are just folded round and stapled at the front at the chest.

Then you just paint em up and make a few wires to stop em from blowing away.

The stack is around 25 - 30 decoys and takes up no more space than one full bodied plastic decoy!

Last pic shows view from 'above'.

Just a basic pigeon shape but believe me they work!

2 more pics to follow

Thanks for that they look good, what is the measurement from the tip of the nose say to the tip of the tail and the width wing to wing.

(edited to say measurements on/from the template)

I will be trying this.

Thank you for the tip. ;)
