couldn't sleep,so out over the valley.............

Recommended Posts

I woke up about 0430hrs,and I just laid there not being able to sleep,so,I decided to get up and pop over the valley to see what there might be about.I got to the land well before daylight, and,as I walked up the side of the first field(very steep)the Tawny Owls were going for it big time,it seemed like there were hundreds of them,I love this time of day when you are out in the countryside with nothing but the wildlife with you.I got into position to wait for the day to begin, and,I picked for my hide an old JCB that had been backed into the hedge giving me a great place to ambush whatever ambled by.

I had been tucked in there for about 3/4 hour before the daylight slowly started to creep in,and, the Woodies that had spent the night in the wood at the top of the field started to fly off to their feeding grounds, and,a Cock pheasant let me know he was there with his throaty rasp and a quick beating of wings(probably the equivalent of us scratching our balls first thing...lol),and then I thought I saw something moving quite quickly through the young xmas trees.Yes I did see something, but,it was staying amongst the cover and moving around a bit erratically, then it came into the open, and,I can safely say that it was the first Hare that I had ever seen in the lower slopes of the valley, the Market gardener definitely wouldn't be happy at me for not shooting it,but,I took great pleasure in watching it scrabble around like a young puppy with a stick,it was running one way then the next, jumping in the air, having a whale of a time and all on it's own I was mesmerised because I just don't get to see many hares,so shooting it was out of the question, then as quickly as it arrived it disappeared back into the wood.

I decided to have a stroll as it was now nearly 0700hrs,I crossed the next two fields and sat under a very big Ash tree looking out over a scrubby field bisected by a scrubby hedge with a few large trees in it.It is from this position that I have shot a good few Muntjac, but,as it was overcast I wasn't holding out too much hope of seeing too many, but,I had been sat there now for at least an hour, and the cramp was starting to creep in when right up in the top corner of the field a very red fox was making it's way down the valley.I started to call, but,I was given the cold shoulder, not even a sidewards glance, but,I carried on calling as it disappeared out of sight hoping that it was just playing the wind game, and trying to come in from a different angle.I called for 5 - 10 minutes but, nothing,so I settled down again to scan the field. With that another fox came strolling across the field towards me,and,at around 150 yds and with me already set on the sticks I gave one quick squeek just to get his attention, but, with that squeek he came in like a greyhound, and I had to bark to stop him at about 80yds or he would of gone out of sight as there was a large hump in the field,he looked up at me and I put a 100 grainer right under his chin, and totally unzipped him......well I say Him...........you be the judge, cos I can't tell...............
