whites or white hare

Recommended Posts

They turn white in winter and are pretty easy for a good lurcher to catch DEPENDING on the terrain they are running on.I caught a lot pre ban and found them better tasting than the brown hare.atb dell
They are smaller than the brown hare but look big due to their fur being thicker.Their nowere nr as fast or as strong as the brown hare.atb dell

We have the Mountain hare up in Shetland. They call it salt and pepper when their coat is both colours. My now-retired lurcher used to come home with them sometimes. I must admit to thinking they are off limits as they are so beautiful and no problem on our islands. Now rabbits are a huge problem and I encourage any dog to get them.

Great pics Pignut.

Yes, i have to agree with other experienced guys on here...and Snoops.... that the White/Blue hare is easier to catch than the brown, but i feel that really to compare the two is disrespectful to the white hare. In deep heather they are easy to catch, but if they are out on the fresh burnt ground they can put up a good run, and , of course, the clever little buggers will go to ground readily. They have varying shades of white in their pelage, some being almost polar-bear-white, others being a slushy mud brown. Thats mother nature providing insurance. In snowy winters the darker hares will be predated, whereas in winters of less snow the really white hares will be on the recieving end of tooth and claw.

Some people talk disparagingly of them, but i really like the White hare. Its a survivor.......And long may they remain so.....JD
