comanche 3,005
White spirit ,petrol ,parraffin, acetone or similar poured down the hole should help tighten the skin and hold the hair better .
stubby 175
Ive got two, both done different ways, both fully intact and not rotting 1st, cut around base of tail, pull out bone, flushed through with methylated spirt, dry out in shed 2nd, cut around base and pulled off bone, whittled a hazel stick and pushed that back in where bone would be, again, dried out in shed the one washed with meths, may be a little more supple, but thats about it.... steve109 43
you gotta pull the bone out, then you can either put borax in it or soak in a salt/borax brine [make a small hole at the tip so the brine runs through] after a min of 3 days take out and rinse and soak in lenor or simular. you get a supple nice smelling brush
Malt 379
I done one a few years back, just filled it up with meths and hung it in the shed for a few weeks. Then I gave it a wash & rinse with the wife's best shampoo!

Matt 160
Remove the bone, fill with salt and then plug with a cork. Will last forever without stinking and look good.

Guest Bubbleduck
Does the meths make the skin supple and soft like it's been properly tanned? I tried doing a squirrel tail recently by slitting it all the way along to get the bone out and then covering it with salt till dry but it just made the skin go stiff and the fur went all flat instead of looking nice and fluffy. I've got a squirrel skin from a small one I shot yesterday and want to have a go at tanning it without using all those nasty chemicals, what would be the best way to go about it?
