coursing under rules...

Recommended Posts

The Staghounds that i have, are the spitting image of the "Old" Deerhounds you see in history books, and museams and such...there not huge great big things...but there big enough to do what i want...i would say they are a WHOLE lot more Deerhound in stature and personality than 90% of the actual Kennel Club Registered Deerhounds!!...in many books, they say that the progression in modern firearms was the death of the working Deerhound in the UK...maybe some of the dogs brought over to the States (from original working Deerhound stock) is still alive and working in the breed/type that is know known as the Staghound?...who knows?...there sure is the work out here for the Old type of Deerhound...after all there are wolves, coyote, deer, boar, antelope, jack rabbits etc....all the best.

Hi all,

when I wrote this topic I was just wondering how to compare the breeds and as the coursing rules are the same for deerhounds/greys/salukis I just wondered which breed would catch the most and if someone would have records.

Reason is that within now and say 2 years I am looking for a hare dog as an addition to my rabbit bitch which isn't getting any younger...either pure whippet, whippet-grey, pure saluki or a saluki hybrid...no collie blood no terrier.

basically I want something of medium size with good feet and stamina that is a pleasant house dog and catches me a hare when properly conditioned.

I'd go for a pure saluki, probably the best feet in the business, definately the best for stamina, and wonderful companions and very good house dog but I am very biased.

You want a hare dog Lennard so that narrows it down. You mention coursing under rules but the type of coursing to which you refer is doubled up running and is based on one dog scoring more points than it's opponent and has very little to do with catching hares. When the Forley cup was going in the 90's it was billed as the British single handed championship because it was open to any dog of any breeding so long as the owner was a member of an A.L.C. affiliated club. Anyone was able to register a club with the A.L.C. so that meant no-one was precluded from competing for the cup if they thought their dog was good enough.

Each club ran their own competition and the winner of each of these was entered in the Forley. At one stage there were 34 such winning club champs and a further series of head to head matches needed to be organised in order to halve the entry to make a realistically manageable number for the finals.

If you remember that the criteria for winning through to the next round of each club competition, and then through each round of the final was that each dog must actually catch hares single handed ( and with long slips ensured by the slippers in the Forley final) you will soon see that this type of coursing is eminently more likely to provide the type of dog you seek.

The dogs that progressed this far were all saluki crosses, not because they were anyones favourite type but because they had knocked out all other crosses on the way.

The only pure breed to make it into any of these competitions was a pure saluki bitch which reached the final on at least three occasions and was among the top three twice.

What you need to decide is how much saluki you need depending upon the type and size of land you'll be running on.

Good luck and good hunting.

Lennard go for the saluki x but make sure they are from good working stock dont fall into the same hole that alot of people over here did 25yrs back by using untried saluki's,

where you live at you could fit the fenland in a few times over lucky man :icon_redface:
