MissRhianL 70
I have used electric collar on our dogs, reasons being: to stop sheep worrying along with cows or any form of cattle, as if u get caught with the farmer while ur dog is around the sheeps neck, he'l shoot it. Using the electric collar you do have good results, u have different tensities to use on the dog, the one we used went 1-8. Thankfully the dogs (touch wood) dont run after sheep or cattle, sometimes they wont even look at them. What you looking at using one for??
Pignut 4
I have used one (stands up!) It has cured my two Patts from wandering and one from chasing sheep. She was getting very bad and disobedient to the point of taking absolutely no damn notice. It has worked brilliantly. I can now take my dogs for walk in open hill surrounded by sheep whilst riding my horse. My perfect scenario. They can chase rabbits but are easily called off, they are obedient and life has changed so much. I want my dogs to work when they are asked to, not go buggering off for days on end so that you are sick with worry about whether the local farmer will shoot them if he sees them in his fields during lambing. They wear it when they go out. Never zapped anymore, no need. They are always listening to me. The atmosphere in the house has changed to - I be boss again. It was when a friend (who is a sheep farmer) said that he often saw the black one (small Patt) often and he lives 3 miles away, that I panicked and bought one! We live in open hill and are surrounded by sheep! There really was no choice. Walking the dogs! My house (one on far right!) Main road to town! I don't want to hear what a failure I am at training my dogs. I had no chance. I had to go to hospital for a huge spinal operation and my OH was coming back each dogwalk with less than he started. It was no good. Something had to be done soon before someone shot one of dogs.
tillylamp 1,834
hi all, would any body use these e collars for recall,? only my terrier is coming on a treat, but her recall is,(to be honest)quite bad, when out walking her, she will slip through a hole in a wire fence, and she`s gone,i will call her,and make some interesting noises, but she just dosen`t lisen, i got her when see was 8 months old, and she had no training at all,her basic training is getting much better know, but her recall is really frustrating me know, as if it was better, i could go and do far more with her, another example is,when she is running through a big patch of brambles, stingers,or hedge rows,or thick undergrowth, i can not for the love of god,get her out, when i want her out,i have to wait for her to come out in her own time. would one of these e collars help me with this matter.? what do people think. thanks tillylamp. Pignut 4
Yes, I use mine principally for recall. Where I live (see photos) the wind blows constantly and both Patts feign complete deafness either real or not when they are off hunting on dog walks. The wind blowing in the opposite direction can render anyone deaf within a few yards. We did a human experiment and realised that you literally cannot hear anything a few yards away when the wind gets going! So, yes, mine is for recall. I have it on "doorbell" mode, ie it is set to just beep without a zap and when I call them without a result, then I beep them and they both come running. When I first started their training, they would get a treat for coming back and a thank you and then we would go on with the walk. My walks consisted of them going off to sniff, etc and I would call them back as part of a game fairly constantly for a few walks, giving them a treat and then send them off again. It got their attention during walks and made them look for me constantly rather than they just bugger off and have gone! When they are hunting, they are still aware of me and when I say finish, it is finished, no argument. I use the zap method for sheep. One of the terriers was very keen to see what they were made of and was attacking the ram in the hill to be tumbled with his horns. She thought it was the best game and he was going to kill her. So she ran up to the sheep and I zapped her, full force. She thought the sheep did it and ran back to me where I made sympathetic sounds that sheep were all murderers and she has never done it again. It has worked with other dogs about chickens. The secret is not to tell them off or say anything when you zap them so they think it came from the animal you want them to stay away, ie the chicken fought back. It works very well and you get a very submissive dog about that animal and the memory stays with them forever. Good luck. It is like any tool you have, it is how you use it that matters. If you use it badly or dangerously, you will do alot of damage. If you use it wisely, you have a very effective training method. My dogs have been zapped probably once or twice in their lives. They rarely get beeped now unless they can't really hear me and I have 2 trained Patts that are a joy to take out.

Pignut 4
Mine was a Pac DXT model - for two dogs (wish I had got three on it). http://www.paccollars.co.uk/prod/pactrainer_DXT.htm About £250. Cost a bomb, they have gone up in price but totally money well spent imho. It was that or watch my dogs get shot. I had a back operation so had to rely on someone else to walk them too and the whole situation was becoming quickly potentially disastrous. I would have loved to have trained my dogs better but a terrier's mind, once set, is a very difficult thing to get through. The red mist descends and that is it. They're sticking two fingers up at you while bouncing off into the middle distance. You can yell until you are purple, but they are not coming back until they want to and that can be 8 hours later. For us, this was beginning to be a regular event and we had no control. They were contrite when they came home but off they would go again. Now they don't even think about buggering off ever. I can leave the front door open and they go where they like but not very far - just around the boundary (50 acres). They are always listening to me and instantly come home when called. Today, I rode my horse in the hills with my 3 dogs hunting and chasing and watching/listening to me! Bliss.

Guest chook
Please if your going to use an e-collar, then please learn about them first, as useing them wrongly can cause more problems. Lou's probably the only one i would trust to get advice and help from on e-collars. http://www.loucastle.com/articles.htm
